Hailed as one of the best films of the millennium, this silent movie, filmed in black & white, has taken the film world by storm.
It’s the late 1920s in Hollywood and handsome George Valentin is a silent movie idol, THE ARTIST. During the premiere of his latest film, Valentin meets Peppy Miller, a star-struck extra and aspiring actress. The two are attracted to each other and Peppy is given a small dancing role in his next picture. As their romance progresses, Valentin’s producer has to cope with a love-struck star who is distracted on the set, Peppy’s career begins to take off, and Valentin fears that a new fad in the movie business – talkies – will ruin him.
Commiserations to the Parwich households who have been affected by today’s power cut, which struck around lunch time. Repairs are currently taking place, with the aim of restoring power in time for Christmas Day.
Sadly, the lack of electricity means that Chris Hoolie will be unable to perform at the Legion tonight. However, the Legion is staying open: powered by candle light, and looking very picturesque with it! Meanwhile, The Sycamore still has full power.

Thank you Jane for the one and only response: Good effort, but the answer is Badger, as he only has two legs. I can almost hear you screaming.
Well we are almost at the finishing line, not very seasonal weather, but we may just avoid a hosepipe ban next Summer!
Did you happen to read some of the pathetic excuses in the press recently given by people offloading unwanted pets? “He isn’t as cute as he was when he was a puppy; We have a new three piece suite and their colours clash; It breaks wind too much; It smells like a dog”, would you Adam & Eve it? Well it has been wet and really quite mild – especially on Saturday night when we saw an amazing 10.8˚C recorded just before midnight. Thankfully the next few days look like being a bit drier than the last few, but there will still be some rain on Monday. At the moment, Christmas day looks like it might be dry, brighter and a bit cooler with the odd shower, but absolutely no chance of a white Christmas this year.
The list will be updated again next month. Until then, you will be able to find it on the INFO page, via the SITE MAP, and in the ELSEWHERE ON PARWICH.ORG section on the right hand side of this page.
You might have noticed that there has been a raindrop or two in our area over the last 24 hours. There are some pretty big pools of water on the roads so we advise taking extra care. There is a particularly big ‘puddle’ on the way out of the village just before the Ballidon turning that may be challenging for some cars.

Tom is on the Katherine Jenkins show ( repeat ) on ITV 1 Saturday 22nd at 2.35pm and then on Xmas day on the strictly Xmas special at 6.15 pm . Could be fun.
We duly got our dry cold snap as forecast last week, with three consecutive dry days and very low temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures stayed below freezing continuously for 2 days, and a low of -7.1 was recorded at 7:30am on Thursday 13th Dec. Friday then made up for that, being particularly wet.
This week looks a little more difficult to call on a day-to-day basis, with low pressure dominating that will give us changeable weather generally and average temperatures for the time of year. Tuesday looks like it might be a bit brighter, but rain will never be far away and Wednesday looks like it will be wet. The early signs are not good for a white Christmas at this stage, but it’s still too early to be sure.
Hello possums. Any ideas about the teaser? No responses, is there anyone out there? Come on, have a go.
The Queen has recently recorded her Christmas Day message in 3D for the first time. It will be just like having Her Majesty in your own front room, so you will have to act with decorum: no rude noises, no switching over to Harry Potter halfway through, feet off the coffee table (bad form). If you do not have a pet corgi of your own, you can purchase a very lifelike one from Harrods that even does whoopsies on the carpet. If you are in any doubt about how to behave, Pippa Middleton’s guide to 3D royal etiquette is available in all good pound shops now.
Three U.S women were outraged when their dinner check arrived, identifying them as three fat girls in the corner. The manager of Chilly D’s Sports Lounge offered them a 25% discount whilst stifling a laugh, which added insult to injury. As a result, the ladies have advised their friends at Fannies Flab Fighters to boycott the restaurant in future. Jimmy Slim, the owner, was appalled by the actions of his staff and has stated categorically that it is not company policy to cause embarrassment to obese greedy customers.

We have received the following message from Jane B and Glynis D:
An enormous thank you to everyone involved in decorating the Church ready for Christmas. Yesterday 16 people turned up during the day to help arrange foliage on pillars, create arrangements in the porch, on windows and other surfaces, dressing the tree, arranging the crib and cleaning up the Church at the end of the afternoon. Hot drinks, sausage rolls and cakes kept everyone’s energy levels up and Christmas carols echoed through St Peter’s. Work towards the decoration of the Church has gone on all week; on Tuesday and Wednesday we raided numerous gardens, gathering masses of foliage, so thank you to those who welcomed us with our secateurs; 12 pew ends have been beautifully decorated and on Thursday three ladies came in to dress their windows and the school have been working together on creating a lovely eco-tree. Finally thank you to those who very generously donated money, which enabled us to buy flowers for some of the displays.
If you are around on Tuesday 8th January, from 11am, we will be taking all the decorations and arrangements down and help is always appreciated.
The Winster Guisers will be at the Sycamore at around 8.30 pm and then at the Parwich Legion at 9.00 pm(Friday December 14th).
The Winster Guisers perform at various venues around the White peak villages of Derbyshire throughout the Christmas period bringing a traditional mix of colourful drama and festive cheer to an unsuspecting public. Guising is a local tradition better known around England as Mumming. The dictionary tells us that a ‘mummer’ is one who ‘masquerades’ in a folk play usually at Christmas whilst a ’Guiser’ is a person in disguise.
The characters enter as follows, the Enterer-in, dressed in formal attire, sets that stage for the ‘conflict’ between St. George, a noble champion dressed in Red and riding a hobby Horse, and the Black Prince of Paradise. St George is victorious and the King of Egypt then berates him for killing his son. An old woman then calls for a doctor and a Quack Doctor enters with his potions to cure the dead prince. This is done by ‘uplifting’ a pint of beer from a member of the audience and is drunk in one swallow by the prone prince. A departure from the narrative now occurs as a devilish Beelzebub enters followed by Little Johnny Jack, with his wife and family on his back, and then Little Devilly Doubt. The climax of the ‘show’ is the appearance of the Groom and the Horse, a real horse’s head operated by a concealed Guiser, who captivates with his antics. A final song rounds off the performance and a welcoming beer is then supped by all to bring good luck to all those present.
Over the last quarter of a century the Guisers have become well known and liked visiting traditional hostelries and houses on a regular basis. Refreshment is taken to bring ‘good luck’ to the hosts and a collection is taken for Charity.
According to details on the PDNPA website, planning permission has been granted for two wind turbines at Hill Top Farm, each at a tower height of 24.5m, with a further 9m rotor radius. This is smaller than the originally rejected proposal, which measured 48.4m from base to blade tip. Note also that this is a time-limited consent, which expires after 25 years.
The newly decorated British Legion threw open its doors to host its first Christmas Fayre. Mother Nature obliged with a rain-free, starry night. Guests were greeted in the forecourt by a wonderful candlelit stall of Christmas greenery and decorations by Bill and Ann . Inside the aroma of mulled wine and home baked mince pies permeated the air. Stalls were set up all around the ground floor with some wonderful wreaths, made by Delia, hanging from the balcony. The new dimmable lighting system could be adjusted to show off the many talented offerings from participants and lowered at the end of the evening providing a convivial atmosphere for socialising. All in all, a triumph for those who have worked so hard to give us such a welcoming venue in the village.
If you missed the event, or wish to contact the participants, links to some of the email addresses or phone numbers are given above each photo.
