The infamous school for ‘young ladies’, St T…’s , is once again facing dire financial crisis. While unorthodox headmistress Camilla Fritton (Rupert Everett) struggles to deal with the new Education Minister Geoffrey Thwaites’ tireless advances and his unyielding objective to transform her chaotic environs into a ‘respectable’ ladies college, the responsibility for saving St T…’s from its creditors falls to the anarchic pupils. The fearless girls gather together a motley crew of teachers, associates, and the rest of the school’s ungovernable and uninhibited pranksters, who, using their wit, sass, determination and ingenuity attempt to pull off the heist of the century and save the school from impending bankruptcy. A RIOT! (more…)

Last Night’s Environment Group Meeting
Posted in Environment, Societies on Tuesday April 22, 2008| Leave a Comment »
Peter Trewhitt supplied the following:
For an hour or so we took over the front bar at the Sycamore, so the casual drinkers participated in the meeting whether they wanted too or not. Some 12 people participated in the discussions on the Conservation Area appraisal with ideas from two other people not present being included. Despite the demands the Memorial Hall redevelopment will place on people’s time we strongly felt the Environment Group should continue, with some five people so far committing to the Group.
Overall the feeling about the National Park Authority’s consultation document on the Parwich Conservation Area was positive. It was recognised that a lot of work had gone into producing a good description of village. Individuals had some comments on the detail of the appraisal document, though it was recognised that it was impossible for everyone to agree on all of the detail. However it is hoped that people will raise some of these points directly with Sue Adam and the Peak Park Authority’s conservation team.
What we felt was important was the overall characterisation of the village. It is important that we conserve the village as a mixed living working community and not just a set of buildings. A letter to the Authority will be prepared from the group looking at the following:
- The village as a living community (more…)

Hathersage – a gentle afternoon out
Posted in Eating Out, Out & About on Monday April 21, 2008| 2 Comments »
Often when you have friends & family staying regularly you are looking for some different ideas of where to go & where to have a “nibble” out. Well this week I have been trying out some new places.
David Mellor – On the outskirts of Hathersage, a rather innovative design, a round building houses his cutlery making works. Opposite is a delightful shop where you can buy his various designs in cutlery, glass & kitchen ware, as well as other contempory products. Adjecent to here is his cafe & small museum open 7 days a week. Needless to say I did test the quality of his food. The menu is simple but excellent, we opted for home-made soup with major chunky sandwiches, with a salad garnish & pickles. Delicious. We passed on the cakes which I have to say looked slightly more forlorn, we had to leave space for our next stop.
Did you know that David Mellor designed the current traffic light system, which we still use today (but not the somewhat faulty ones on the B5056).
The National Trust Longshaw Estate again on the outskirts of Hathersage & Grindleford. Lots of open moorland walking – great for all (even partically disabled) & great for children to run around. The tea rooms were fine, with good views & nice cakes – ideal after a good walk.
It was only 40 – 45minutes drive so a pleasant afternoon out from Parwich
Announcing two new “out and about” guides…
Posted in About this site, Eating Out, Out & About on Monday April 21, 2008| Leave a Comment »
We have just added two new pages to this site: an “Eating Out” guide and a “Where To Go” directory.
The “Eating Out” guide lists all the local local pubs, restaurants, cafés and tearooms that we have reviewed on this site to date, along with star ratings. Click on each link to read our review. Most importantly: if you either agree or disagree with our opinions, then please let us know, either in the comments or by e-mail.
The “Where To Go” directory is intended as a guide to other local attractions which have caught our collective eye. Although it only contains one entry at present (hey, you have to start somewhere!), we will be adding to it whenever a new review appears on the blog.
For future reference, these two guides can be found on our ever-expanding USEFUL INFO page.
If you would like to contribute a review of your own, then do please contact us.

We would like to thank Dorothy for all the hard work she has put into creating a woodland garden on the Parish Council land in front of Parwich Hall.
The Parish Council were bold enough to go for this land in the centre of the village when it came up for auction a couple of years ago, and Dorothy certainly rose to the challenge of maintaining it. (more…)

Fun & Games at the Grand Opening

Parwich sport has never had it so good, as dozens of fans crowded together supporting this impressive occasion. The ground was hard & the conditions were cold but we witnessed drama, mental resilience & the breathless physical fitness of so many.
We may not have had the hordes of celebrities who were present last night at Calzaghe’s fight, we were just more selective choosing Dr Sam Strachan (aka Tom Chambers) to open the occasion. One of his more memorable & very astute statements was “may every ball be in” as he manfully cut the recycled red ribbon to the hard play area. Di who opened the proceeding stated that she “particularly enjoyed the kiss” from heart throb ‘Sam’ of Holby City fame.
Three teams were competing for the accolade of champion of champions, the single sex team of the Netball players and the mixed teams of footballers & tennis players.

How to make a road unsafe by reducing the speed limit – a personal view by Bob.
Posted in Opinion, Roads, Transport on Sunday April 20, 2008| 3 Comments »
I have been driving up and down the A515 most weekdays for around 12 years. From 1995 when we lived in Doveridge, near Uttoxeter to work in Buxton, and from 2002 when we moved to Parwich. The past month, I have witnessed more dangerous driving incidents than most of those 12 years put together.
What has changed this past month? The speed limit has been reduced for most of the length between Ashbourne and Buxton from 60mph to 50mph.
On the face of it, one would think that reducing the speed limit would encourage safer driving, and I for one would certainly endorse a reduction in limit (to 40 or even 30) in inherently dangerous stretches such as the Alsop curves, Fenny Bentley and Brierlow Bar. However, a blanket 50mph along the whole stretch including Lean Low seems to be encouraging some really bad driving.
Many drivers have dutifully reduced their speed, however many don’t, and some appear to get frustrated with those who do observe the 50 limit which encourages dangerous overtaking manoeuvres at high speed. A great distance can be covered overtaking a vehicle traveling at 50mph, and drivers get themselves into trouble very quickly through a lack of judgement about how much road they have available.
Several times in the past month, I have come over the brow of a hill to find two cars abreast traveling toward me at relative closing speed of 100mph+. I honestly do not believe the road has been made safer in many stretches by the introduction of this blanket 50mph speed limit, and additionally there are very expensive looking solar and wind powered signs appearing along the length of the road, presumably to remind drivers to keep to the speed limit.
It doesn’t seem to make sense to me – I just don’t want to give in to the cynic in me which suspects an ulterior motive. What authority could possibly put revenue raising above safety considerations?

The Bulls Head, Ashford in the Water
Posted in Eating Out, Out & About on Saturday April 19, 2008| 1 Comment »
I’ve been told that I need to expand my expertise from tea rooms into dining out. Now I have no problem with this, just in case you hadn’t realised I like my food and I’ll happily send my expenses in at the end of each month, but where to!
This evening we set off with my parents to The Bulls Head at Ashford in the Water. Now it is probably 6 years since we last ate there so I have to say I did ask around for various opinions before I set out. The pub is a proper pub, open fires in each room, locals at the bar & a fantastic looking menu. The choice is not large, which gives a good feeling that it’s freshly prepared and not “snip & ping”, (snip the bag & ping the microwave). On an adjecent table there was a group of 4 and their meal looked so good that the four of us ordered the same, Steak & Stockport Ale Pie with braised red cabbage & dripping roast potatoes, (blow the diet for another day). It was gorgeous, the meat melted and the portions were ample. Dessert, well how could we refuse. We ordered a selection just to check things out, the White Chocolate Baileys Cheesecake was a real melt in the mouth & the Italian chocolate & almond slice was nothing like the brownie the waitress suggested we ordered. Maybe it was a “posh brownie”, slices of delectable chocolate with a berry coulis – I loved it. I have it on good authority that the cheese was good, all I managed to pinch was some of the oat biscuits which were the tastiest I have tried.
Ashford in the Water is a lovely village and not much more than 20 minutes away. So with the lighter evenings, it is a delightful drive, via Monyash & Sheldon. Meals are served from 6.30pm and tables are not reserved. It is a Robinson’s house! Tel:01629 812 931

Application for Extension Rejected
Posted in Housing, News, Planning on Friday April 18, 2008| 3 Comments »
The Planning Application for a rear extension to Station Road Farm house was rejected today by the Peak Park Authority’s Planning Committee. It was rejected by 5 votes to 4, with one abstention. Of the possible 19 Committee members some eleven, including the Chair, were present, meaning the rejection was carried by less than one third of the Committee.
The Committee were clearly split on the application with a motion to defer making a decision until after a site visit, only being rejected after the Chair used her casting vote. Some Committee members felt they could not make decision only on the basis of photographs, especially given the strong local support, including that of the Parish Council*, in favour of the application, however they were out voted. It should be noted that a member of the public present subsequently complained that the photographs and plans shown at the meeting were very difficult to see, and that they only told one side of the story. This had been raised by speakers in relation to other items on the agenda.

Work is progressing on a replica of the Tympanum.
This ancient carved stone is now above the west tower door of Parwich Church. Experts have dated the original variously between the seventh and twelfth centuries, though it most likely to have been carved in the early 1100s drawing on earlier Saxon and Celtic imagery. Since being placed in its current position in 1873 it has suffered considerable weathering. The replica is being made by the National Conservation Centre in Liverpool and here are a couple of photographs of the process forwarded to us by Jonathan Marshall:

A big welcome to Emma on the blog team: she has lots of ideas on how to contribute to the site. One idea she has is a regular feature on planning issues. However with the following, I am perhaps being guilty here of stealing some of her thunder.
I noticed today that the Planning Officer’s report on the proposed extension to Station Road Farm has been posted on the Peak Park Authority’s website. This is to be considered at Friday’s meeting of the Planning Committee at Bakewell. The Parish Council have supported this application and there are some 31 letters of support from local residents, and no letters of objection.
The Officer’s Report makes interesting reading, as it is much more thorough than reports I have previously seen. The Planning Service is undoubtedly committed to fighting for refusal of the application. It is too late to add any further comments, though the Committee meeting is open to the public. I am sure the applicant and her family will welcome the support of friends and neighbours (in the real, not planner’s interpretation of the word) at what must be a stressful time.
Confusingly the Planning Officer raises the issue of building affordable housing; though do read the report as it may help the community in general to raise the profile of this with the Authority, after their previous resistance to the Nottingham Housing Association application for additional houses at Smithy Close and Rathbone Croft. Also the report is perhaps an indication of the role the Conservation Area Appraisal may play in future planning applications.

Carolyn’s Corner (No.3)
Posted in News, People on Monday April 14, 2008| 2 Comments »
Thank you to Emma for sending this in.
A quick update on Carolyn…..
Carolyn is no longer on any medication and has been moved to a Rehab Ward (Ward 1), where she is best placed to receive the treatment she needs to recover.
Howard is reporting steady, daily, progress and improvements and he was most insistent that I pass on his thanks and appreciation to everyone who has sent cards and photos, made voice recordings and to all who’ve left comments on the previous postings. All of these things have been really useful in helping Carolyn’s day to day recovery.
A lot of us are keen to visit Carolyn; however, as much as she would love to see her friends, the hospital has asked that visits to be limited to family for the time being. The reason for this is that the hospital has advised that Carolyn still needs plenty of rest to make the quickest recovery possible. Similarly, there is still no news on how long it will be before we can have Carolyn back in the village, where she belongs! However, the reality is that she will probably be in hospital for many weeks. So, in the meantime any new comments, letters, photos and voice recordings would be welcome!
Howard checks the website regularly and takes all comments to read to Carolyn so this is a really good way to get messages to Carolyn (and Howard)! Don’t forgot there is still the Dictaphone in the shop/pub for anyone who wants to send a message in their in own voice – speaking to a machine can be a bit awkward and alien for some of us, but I know Carolyn would love to hear familiar voices so even a quick “hello” would be great.
There will be a further update next week………
When is a neighbour not a neighbour?
Posted in 2008, Opinion, Planning, Posts of Note, Services on Monday April 14, 2008| 24 Comments »
The following was supplied by ‘a bemused Peak dweller’ (otherwise Peter T):
The commendable success of PARWICH.ORG, I feel, relates to the strength of our community and to neighbourliness. I had thought up to March of this year that I had understood the word ‘neighbour’, but, having been in correspondence with the Peak District National Park Authority on this matter, I now realise I have completely failed to understand this word. Hopefully readers will learn from my failure to grasp the extent of my own ignorance.
Somewhat naively I had assumed that ‘neighbour’ first and foremost means next door neighbour: ‘people that live in adjacent dwellings’. Many readers are probably shaking their heads, and wondering “Was he asleep at Sunday school? Doesn’t he know the Parable of the Good Samaritan?” (St. Luke chapter 10 verses 30-37). Indeed here Christ finishes with the question “Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was the neighbour to him that fell among the thieves?”. Already there is more to the concept than first meets the eye.
I had previously voiced concern that the Peak District National Park Authority, unlike many local authorities, did not automatically inform people of planning applications that might affect their property, so I was very pleased to see they had introduced a Neighbour Notification Scheme for planning applications. Future upkeep of Parson’s Croft
Posted in Services, Societies, Sport on Sunday April 13, 2008| Leave a Comment »
Following the previous post on the successful resurfacing of the hard play area and the community work day, Di Turnbull has sent us further information:
P.A.R.C. stands for Play Area Resurfacing Committee. It was set up purely to organise the resurfacing of the hard play area. It is a sub-committee of the Parish Council. After the opening on the 20th April, recommendations for the maintenance and upkeep of the area will be forwarded to the Parish Council and then P.A.R.C. will disband.
We are hoping to have a preliminary meeting during April for anyone who has an interest in managing, maintaining and promoting the whole of the Parson’s Croft sporting area – a new ‘Field Management Committee’. This would involve all user groups – cricket, tennis, bowls, football, netball etc.- Parish council reps. and adjoining residents (or any residents for that matter), who would like to play an active role in this fantastic facility. We are so lucky to have it and would like to keep it in tip-top condition.
Di also added the following discussion point:
A couple of years ago, I set up a fundraising section on the Tennis Club website, which has clickable banners. These have tracking codes embedded and earn the Club commission on sales. It has been working fine so far but could be much more widely used. For some time I have been wondering how to open this up to the whole village, as I’m sure many people buy internet goods, who are not aware of this scheme. There are lots of banners on the site and it’s just a matter of clicking through the link to the merchant. There is a ‘Fundraising Sitemap’, which shows all the companies and their commission rate. Then there are the two links pages, split into categories – one with general companies and another for sports gear.
If enough funds were raised, this may be an opportunity to benefit all user groups/villagers in relation to the Parson’s Croft area.
(Pheadair’s note: We have not addressed the issue of using PARWICH.ORG to generate income yet and we see extending community involvement as our first priority, though a few people have already made suggestions and it is planned that we will participate in the Memorial Hall fund raising. Do add your thoughts.)

Due to the level of interest being shown in the new pilates class that is starting in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday 23rd April, it may be possible to run a second class from 7-8pm. At the moment we need a few more people to make this second class viable, so if you are interested please ring Rebecca on 318 as soon as possible.
