PARWICH.ORG has been contacted by Steve Garidis of the Electric Bicycle Network, which is part of a major initiative to create a network of electric bikes and charging points across the Peak Park, copying similar schemes in Switzerland and Germany etc. Steve says:

Have you seen cyclists whizzing past, seemingly unconcerned about hills and headwinds? If so, they are probably on one of the new electric bicycles available for hire from hotels, self catering cottages, campsite and cycle hire centres around the Peak District.

Part of the Electric Bicycle Network launched in the Peaks this Spring. This new technology means that pretty much anyone can get into the great outdoors on two wheels. Why not give it a try? Bikes are available to hire at Carsington Water and our own Rivendale Camping and Caravan Park in Alsop-en-le-Dale.”

To promote this new initiative, two electric bikes have been made available for free trial at Carsington Water, exclusively to PARWICH.ORG readers, in return for a review on this site. This offer is strictly on a first come, first served basis.

If you’d like to try one of these bikes out, and if you’re happy to write a review of your experience for PARWICH.ORG, then please e-mail the blog team and we’ll put you in touch.

Congratulations are due to Sir Richard FitzHerbert, who has been elected as the Conservative member for the Dovedale and Parwich ward of Derbyshire Dales District Council, with 594 votes against the Labour candidate’s 181 votes.

This ward encompasses the parishes of Eaton and Alsop, Fenny Bentley, Hartington Nether Quarter, Lea Hall, Mappleton, Newton Grange, Parwich, Tissington and Thorpe. Sir Richard replaces our previous councillor, Simon Spencer (also Conservative), who had won the seat uncontested in 2007.

As for the Carsington Water ward, which includes the parish of Ballidon and Bradbourne, this was held by Lewis Rose (Conservative), who won it uncontested.

Representation for Pikehall residents is more complicated, as Pikehall is split between five different parishes (Parwich, Hartington Nether Quarter, Ballidon/Bradbourne, Brassington and Elton). Residents will be represented as follows, depending on their parish:
– Parwich and Hartington Nether Quarter: Sir Richard FitzHerbert
– Ballidon/Bradbourne and Brassington: Lewis Rose
– Elton: Colin Swindell (Labour member for Winster & South Darley)

There were no Parish Council elections for Parwich, or for Ballidon/Bradbourne. In the Eaton/Alsop parish, the three candidates – John Bunting, Christopher Duffell and David Wainwright – were returned unopposed.

The Conservatives now hold 29 seats on the Council. Labour have 5 seats, the Lib Dems have 4, and there is one Independent member. Compared to the 2007 elections, the Conservatives have gained 3 seats, Labour have gained 1 seat, and the Lib Dems have lost 4 seats.

Full district council election results for Derbyshire Dales can be found here.
Town and Parish Council results can be viewed here.

On Monday there was a post requesting information about a piece of furniture, a settle, that seems to have made its way from Alsop to Australia. Whilst there is no more detail about its origin, Richard has sent in more more photos as a result of Peter T’s comment.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The uprights appear to be original, however he is correct with the latin writing piece as it has been attached to some ply wood, along with the pieces either side of it. That said they appear to be ancient. Who knows whether they are orininal and how thay may have been attached.

I have added some close up shots too as they show two coats of arms. Perhaps Peter is able to generate a comment about them. I have also added a close up of a carbing in the box section. Thanks Richard W, Melbourne, Australia

Can you settle this mystery?

This email has come in from Richard Wallach of Melbourne, Australia.  If you have any information, either use the comment box or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will forward it on.

I write from my location in Australia, as I am in possession of a settle that I believe came from Alsop Hall. I have on occasion tried to make contact with people who may be able to verify the item, but to no avail. To that end, you may appreciate my reason for trying this forum.

The story goes that the settle was jettisoned in the 1930s, along with other unwanted items. It was duly collected and kept rather than being destroyed, and eventually was on sold to me. I have added some images of the settle and would appreciate any help identifying it and explaining the “writing” and where possible its history.

As happens on bank holidays throughout the Spring and Summer, Alsop-en-le-Dale welcomed all to sample tea and cakes in the most beautiful of surroundings. The marquee was needed as the weather veered from pleasant sunniness to hail! That didn’t matter in the slightest though as the tea was piping hot and the cakes were heavenly!

In fact, most people had a good chance to catch up on things…

…and have a grand old relax…

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to provide such an enjoyable event.

Alsop Hall – a historical query.

We have received the following enquiry from A. Jackson, regarding the history of Alsop Hall.

I have a query about Alsop Hall and the family that resided there.

I recently bought two books, both with inscriptions on the inside. The first (called Lost Gip by Hesba Stretton) has the following inside: “To John, from Mrs Heald, Alsop Hall, Derbyshire“. Could you tell me anything about both these names? Probably written around the 1900s (due to the age of the book).

The second book I believe to be from the same place, as they were purchased from the same stall, are the same age and by the same publisher. The second is inscribed: “Awarded to Jane Lamb for lessons and attendance in the year 1900.” Again (although the books may in fact not be linked), could anyone tell me anything of this Jane Lamb?

I realise family histories are hard to track, but I’m intrigued to know something of these three people: John, Mrs Heald and Jane Lamb.

I look forward to hearing from you!

If you are able to assist with this enquiry, please leave a comment or e-mail the blog team: parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

Thanks to Shura Prince for contacting us with the following information:

My name is Shura Prince. I live at Alsop Moor, and I am doing a charity coffee morning on Saturday the 5th December at Alstonefield Village Hall, from 10am till 1pm.

There will be a Santa’s Grotto, face painting, tombola and a variety of stalls. All money raised is going to PACT (Parents Association for Children with Tumours and Leukaemia).

This is a charity close to my heart, as my daughter Evie had leukaemia when she was 6 weeks old. She is now 6 and is doing well. So I just want to give back something to the charity that helped me and my family through a tough time.

Yesterday 29 of us  attended probably the most important course in our lives – learning how to save a child’s life – that child could be yours!

Course was supported by the Charity ‘Just A Few Minutes’, organized by Alan Gibson consultant neonatologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and staff from Sheffield & Chesterfield Hospitals. We were dealing with the most precious of things, a child’s life, but never has a course seems so compelling and interesting. Considering the seriousness of the subject, at times we were in fits of laughter, especially when faced with some of the ‘real life’ scenarios and the initial ways in which we tried to deal with the situation.  Click on any of the photos to enlarge. Gunpowder, Treason and Plot

Manor Farm, Alsop-en-le-DaleTradition has it that after Guy Fawkes was captured and the Roman Catholic Gunpowder Plot failed in 1605, one of his fellow conspirators hid from King James’ men here at Manor Farm in Alsop en le Dale.

This is perhaps a little surprising as some fifty years earlier the Alsop family (lords of the manor) were active Protestants, sheltering a radical Protestant cleric from Queen Mary’s men next door at the Hall.

Guy Fawkes’ failure to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James has been celebrated with bonfires on the 5th of November ever since.  If you know any more about the identity of the 1605 conspirator at Manor Farm and local links to the original Plot, or about associated local customs, or take any photographs of tonight’s celebrations do send them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk.
