To enable this year’s bonfire to happen we need your wood, logs – anything suitable to burn on the village bonfire (please do not bring anything with metal or nails such as mattresses, pallets or sofas!).

Please take your items to the bonfire field on Alsop Road. The site is available to start building the bonfire now – so the more we can get the better.

The bonfire will take place on Wednesday 5th November 2014 from 7pm. There will be a bonfire, Best Guy competition, fireworks and refreshments.

Any questions email lucywigley@googlemail.com

Brian Foden

The funeral for Brian Foden will take place at 1.30 pm on Thursday 16 October at St Peter’s Church, followed by a burial in the churchyard. There will then be refreshments in the Memorial Hall. Jon and Sam have requested family flowers only . Any donations will go to the Derbyshire Air Ambulance which came to Brian’s aid a few years ago and which he recognised as a vital resource for the village.

Our sympathies are with Jon and Sam and other members of Brian’s family. Brian made a huge contribution to the village over the years and he will be very much missed by all.

Aluminium Foil for Charity?

I have a bag of used foil (milk bottle tops, trays, wine bottle tops, no cans). I gave it to the RNIB in the past, but don’t know whether there is a charity, with a local base, that still collects foil. Far too little to take it to the scrap merchant!

Before I put it in the recycling bin, has anyone got another, charitable suggestion?

Hello Possums,

Well the first signs of winter have arrived: the tins of Roses and Quality Street chocolates in the stores are piled higher than Simon Cowell’s ego. The DFS sale is getting underway; guaranteed delivery for Xmas. Ho! Ho! Ho! Pay nothing for ten years, then interest free credit forever.

Ghostly whispers are swirling around the ancient twisting cobwebbed nooks and crannies and spiral staircases of ‘Hogwarts’ suggesting that Harry Potter may be mounting his magic broomstick once again to combat the dark forces. His broomstick will now of course be classed as a mobility aid and qualify for tax relief.

The Black Lion pub in Kent has come under fire for displaying a notice to the effect that, to avoid accident or injury to your child, whilst the little angel is rampaging through the pub out of control, a member of staff will be only to pleased to nail the darling little poppet to your table for the duration of your visit. Absolutely outrageous, don’t you think?

Film Night next week

Trailer: Continue Reading »

Last night the ladies of Parwich netball club said a fond farewell to Wendy Birds who has played for the team for almost 40 years. Wendy has played with the likes of Rosie Dunn, Janice Wigley, Pauline Laycock, Karen Wigley, Olivia and Edwina Flower, Deb Ryde, Paula Lynam and the current set of beauties. Wendy has been a versatile and elegant player who has proudly worn the black pleated games skirt with the RBL emblem on it and now the lycra skorts and tight fitting bibs currently sported by the team.
Of the current team some were taken under Wendys wing when they made their first appearance aged just 11 yrs old. Now an age limit of 16 applies to play in the leagues but Wendy has held her own on the court with all those who have had the privilege to play with her.
Last nights farewell took place at the Red Lion in either Hognaston, Hollington or Kniveton or possibly all of them. Wendy tried several times to retire over the last year but her plea to be released was ignored by Captain Flower. Finally the risk of injury and the call of long weekends with Larry have forced the us to accept that Wendy must move on although she is still able to join us on our nights out when we celebrate winning the league yet again!
If anyone is interested in knowing more about Parwich Netball team and its position in the world rankings please get in touch through the blog team. We currently have a vacancy for a good WA!
Thanks for everything Wendy and it won’t be the same without you to keep us calm and focused and remind us to watch Newsnight.

While today (Sunday) looks like being a good day, the rest of the week is looking typically autumnal with bands of rain and wind in prospect along with cooler temperatures.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #91

Hello Possums,

Right Ladies, it’s bio-chemical warfare. Conkers have one of the strongest moth repelling aromas, and in the process of drying out emit a gas which kills off moths and their larvae. In order to be effective the conkers must be fresh, and it is recommended that new ones are placed in your drawers every few weeks or so.

Her Majesty the Queen is seeking a person with a passion for upholstery to fill the post of ‘Senior Restorer’. The successful applicant will be responsible for the 30,000 or so items of sofas and chairs scattered around the various royal properties. A comprehensive knowledge furniture, spanning 300 years, would be a distinct advantage, although it is highly unlikely that anyone could live that long. Previous applicants can get stuffed.

Lord Prezza was, in typical style, left with egg on his face after confusing ‘the bedroom tax’ for ‘the breakfast tax’. Easy to see where his thoughts lie.

A Very Well Attended Meeting

WP_20140930_003 WP_20140930_001

Tuesday’s meeting to explain how to access and use our new village static defibrillator was well supported. Around 50 people came to hear First Responder Co-ordinator Ian Beard tell us what to expect and how to deal with someone in cardiac arrest.
Ian explained what the 999 control desk would tell a caller to do; how to obtain and use the defibrillator and how to give chest compressions and rescue breaths to the patient. He stressed that any aid given is better than none. Everyone appeared to be in agreement that they now felt confident enough to use the defibrillator to assist someone in need.
The evening finished with tea and cake provided by Parwich First Responders.
For anyone who was unable to attend the meeting and who would like to know more they are very welcome to phone Martin C (529) or Sue H (334).
