Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
We appear to be in a bit of a loop in terms of winning and losing. This week we lost both our matches, last week we won both. The week before we lost both. What price two wins next week?
Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 23 July.
Although we lost we gave a good account of ourselves at Whitworth. We managed to win three out of the four games, however in the one we lost, we lost with a vengeance. Dot and Dawn played like demons and Harry and Val came back to achieve a cracking win. The final score was Whitworth 69, Parwich 65 almost a reversal of the score on our green. Next week we entertain Ashwood Park, Buxton who we always seem to struggle against. Let’s hope we can follow our loss week with a win.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Wirksworth – 25 July.
We tried really hard this week. Although we lost the doubles two games to one our scores were good. Clara and Dot came from 13-1 down to win 21-19, what a come back. The final result of the doubles was Wirksworth 61, Parwich 50. In the singles we shared the games three each. Unfortunately our opponents won more points than us scoring 63 to our 61. One great result, however was Tony A who, in only his third game in the league, won 15-12. What a find for us. The final score was Wirksworth 124, Parwich 111.
A good time was had by all on Sunday last week. This week we are playing a club competition, Square Robin. The competition starts at 10.00 Sunday morning. Meander down and have a look.

Puzzled – can anyone enlighten me?
I came across a couple of, what I presume are, clusters of eggs in the garden soil and wondered what these are?
The size of the round (eggs) is approx. 1 – 3 mm, the diameter of the cylindrical cluster is approx. 15-20 mm, the colours are yellow (pale mustard) with a few blue (almost cobalt).
They look like sections of baby sweetcorn without the central core.I am intrigued to know what this is – can anyone tell me?

Female focus for District Council bike riding initiative
Three fabulous Derbyshire Dales locations are now hosting a new cycling initiative that focuses on women.
Following the launch in June at Carsington Water of the first in a series of women-only bike rides on safe trails led by a trained leader, the initiative has moved up a gear with new rides on the Monsal and Tissington Trails.
Suitable for beginners, the scheme is being organised by Derbyshire Dales District Council with partners British Cycling, Carsington Sports & Leisure, Monsal Trail Cycle Hire and the Peak District National Park Authority.
Local women can select their location every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 to 11am. On Mondays, riders meet at Hassop Station; on Tuesdays it’s Carsington Water and on Wednesdays, the starting point for the Tissington Trail is Ashbourne Cycle Hire.
Small children are welcome and it’s just £6 to hire an adult bike and free to use your own. Trailers and child seats are also available to hire and booking is essential on 01629 540478 or email enquiries@carsingtonwater.com for Carsington, and by calling the District Council’s Youth Sports Development Officer Marie Widerman for the Monsal and Tissington Trails on 01629 761380 or email marie.widerman@derbyshiredales.gov.uk
Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Communities Committee, Councillor Jennifer Bower said: “I’ve already tried the Carsington ride myself and had a great time. The District Council works hard to promote safe and healthy communities and these rides are a terrific way of getting more people active – and meeting new people – in a really enjoyable way.”
More information is available online at http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/cycling.

Best wishes to Hugh and Fanny Gibson as they leave their house in Parwich. For many years they have quietly supported so much in the Village: the Church, the old Shop, various Societies, Wakes, but also much more.

Hello Possums,
Hallelujah, the much anticipated Royal birth has finally taken place, ending weeks of speculation. Daphne and Trevor Royal of Buttercup Farm, Tintwistle, Yorkshire have become the proud parents of a bouncing baby girl. Many congratulations to them.
During the current heatwave, R.S.P.C.T.B. Officers from Cubley were alerted to a vehicle parked off the Green in Parwich, when a passerby spotted a number of teddy bears inside in
Steiff-ling conditions obviously suffering from heat exhaustion. Inspector Rupert Grizzly told Weedkiller’s roving reporter, ”It was no picnic rescuing these bears”, which are now being cared for at the Merrythought rescue center in Paddington.

There has been an area of subsidence in Main Street by the entrance to the Memorial Hall (sorry it is not very obvious in the photo), possibly along the line of the stream in a culvet under the road. The Parish Council has informed Highways about this:
Please would you put a notice on the blog to say that the hole that has just appeared outside the Memorial Hall has been reported to the Council
Many thanks

We get a lot of information and press releases from the County and District Councils and the Peak Park Authority. Many are not of specific interest to our immediate area or are too general for parwich.org. However today there are few that may be of tangential interest to some of our readers, not enough to warrant separate posts, but perhaps worth a brief listing here:

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
Now I know I give the impression that bowlers are a hardy lot, but having to put up with the weather we have had for the past week has been nothing short of heroic. Putting up with all this sunshine and winning matches too, what a team.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Bakewell – 16 July.
Thankfully Bakewell are not having a very good season this year. They are struggling down near the bottom of the league, and their form against us did not improve in this match. We even managed to win three of the four games, and without our Edith, who unfortunately had hurt her leg and was unable to play. Anyway the night was hot and steamy, and the bowls was good as well. We came out on top 73 points to 67. We have been slowly creeping up the division, but I’m not sure if this will lift us up from our current sixth place.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Baslow – 18 July.
We had beaten Baslow on their green in the first half of the season and on a stonker of an afternoon we played them on our green. On very hot days some people ride bikes up mountains, we go one better and play bowls! Once again we struggled a bit in the doubles winning only one of the three, but our two new members played for only the second time in the league and they both made a great impact. Well done Tony and Sue.
The singles brought us a bit better results winning five out of the six games. We achieved 85 out of a possible 90 points. The final score was Parwich 131, Baslow 101. This should keep us in the top half of the league.
Our friendly match against Ashbourne Park last Sunday was really enjoyable and we are having another one against Hazelwood this Sunday. It should be another good afternoon. Come down to Parsons Croft and support our regular crowd, Ron T. We start at 2.00pm.

The Parwich on-line weather station seems to have stopped automatically updating itself. Our Weatherman in the village says:
Typical isn’t it – whenever you get extreme weather, the weather web-site goes down. So for all of you on tenterhooks wondering whether we would record a record temperature today, I can tell you that we recorded 32.3 Celsius at 17:00 today in the middle of Parwich – I think that’s a record for my station.
Editor’s note: Of course, having not worked all day, as soon as we post this it has started working again. You got it sorted out very quickly Mr Weatherman-in-the-Village as it is not long since your car pulled in from work, well done.

The Peak District National Park landscape is worth £426million to the local economy.
On an average August day, there are more visitors in the Peak District National Park than residents.
There are 10 times more sheep living in the Peak District National Park than people.
Published online by the Peak District National Park Authority, these statistics and much more information are now available in the new State of the Park report on http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk. The website has been designed for residents researching Neighbourhood Plans, people setting up a new business, farmers needing agricultural data, for teachers and schoolchildren doing projects, university students, conservation and recreation groups, visitors, local politicians – in fact, anyone with an interest in the Peak District National Park.
The web-based report contains information on agriculture, business, climate change, deprivation, economy, employment, housing, industry, nature conservation, population, tourism, transport, recreation and more.
It is structured around four themes of Landscape, Welcoming (tourism and recreation), Communities and Economy, to tie in with the National Park Management Plan http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/npmp
The State of the Park report contains interactive tables, graphs, maps and data that show interesting elements about the national park, from broadband coverage to light pollution maps and much more.

Thank you to Paul for retyping this week’s issue after it went astray in t’interweb – Blog Team
Hello possums,
Well it seems that due to an ‘echnical terror’ Weedkiller disappeared into the ether. Anyway the Weedkiller crew are back from the Amknackeredstan tripe hurling championships, but not without incident I might add. Our illustration executive, Peter T, was detained by the
secret police for filming sensitive installations (i.e. pole dancers at Amknackerdstan’s Communist Working Man’s Club). Fortunately Weedkiller’s diplomatic representative secured his release with a bribe of 5,000 nectar points and a signed photo of Jedward.
Our very own shrinking violet, Colin S, has asked me to point out that, apart from his thespian prowess, he was an accomplished pantomime performer. “Oh! no he wasn’t.” “Oh! yes he was.” Colin played both the ugly sisters in Cinderella at the Hackney Empire; he was well lauded for his part as Jock in ‘Jock and the Beanstalk’ at the Glasgow Hippodrome; but alas came unstuck at the Wigan end-of-the-pier show, dressed as Captain Hook in Peter Pan he had a nasty accident whilst visiting the gents. That’s show business folks. Continue Reading »
