Film Night tonight

This lovely romantic film, based on the book Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, tells of a visionary sheik who has a big dream — to bring salmon fishing to the desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn his dream into reality. The Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary latches on for its potential as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

Greetings, Guys. If anyone is any doubt as to why thousands upon thousands of pounds’ worth of pyrotechnic wizardry bang, sparkle, crackle and whizz into the night sky at this time of the year, you can safely lay the blame at the feet of Guido Fawkes, who – along with his Catholic buddies – failed in their attempt to blow King James VI and his parliament to kingdom come. Guido was discovered in the cellars below with 36 barrels of gunpowder. As it happened, the gunpowder was virtually useless and probably wouldn’t have even been capable of blowing his hat off. Guido and his fellow conspirators were “persuaded” to plead guilty to treason and were sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered. Guido flung himself from the scaffold and actually hung himself to avoid this gruesome execution. Bonfires were lit across the land to celebrate the survival of the king.

What a hoot: a lady in Melbourne, Australia is advertising for night time guardians to watch over her whilst she sleeps. Pretty reasonable, you might think – except for the fact that the successful applicants will be expected to dress as owls. There are no meal breaks, but you are allowed a muesli bar if peckish. Three owls are required to work on a rota basis, at £25 per hour. Breakfast will be provided for the early bird, consisting of field mice, voles, frogs, toads and the odd slug or two.

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:

A pretty good forecast last week, with Halloween proving the most unpleasant day of the week, as predicted – as a result we only got four sets of children demanding sweets with menaces, and Val and Nia must have stayed at home in front of the fire!

It looks like we will have a settled start to the week again next week, and an unsettled end with more extensive rain on Thursday and Friday. Bonfire night tomorrow looks like it will be OK, with the slim possibility of a shower, but all the signs are it will be quite cold and clear with light winds – the perfect bonfire night.

Missing Ram Returns

The missing ram Gary (or is it Bary?) was spotted this afternoon by Joanne J. Although somewhat taken aback by the size of the tup, this intrepid detective secured him in the garden of Hallcliffe until Sandra C was able to attend the identity parade. He has now been taken back into custody.

Asked for an explanation of events Bary (or is it Gary?), replied with a sheepish “no comment”. It was noted however that whatever he had been tup to over the last few days had left him somewhat lame. Is he pulling the wool over our eyes or do ewe know where he has been?

Sandra would like to thank Joanne, Paul and Caroline for their help.

Pilates – a couple of reminders

1) There will not be an intermediate Pilates class on Monday (5th November), as per my earlier schedule.

2) When attending Pilates classes, please remember to bring a small towel cushion or Pilates block for support.

Pianola for sale

Keith P writes:

As we are moving to a new house without room for our magnificent player piano (popularly known as a pianola) we wonder if anybody local would like to buy it.

It was built in Germany in 1923 by Ibach & Sohn, a premium brand. As soon as I purchased it, in 1985, I had it fully refurbished by a pianola company in London and it remains in good condition.

My piano tuner in London thought it was a lovely instrument with a good tone, virtually as good as a small grand piano. It comes complete
with around 200 mostly classical piano rolls.

I can put you in touch with a man who specialises in pianola maintenance and who used to look after it for me when I lived in Leicestershire. Offers please?

Inspection welcome at Fernlea House. Call Keith on 01335 390500 or 01684 576109

Recycling Disappointment

Earlier this  week our new waste and recycling contractor Serco Ltd issued a media  statement in which they stated they were confident all outstanding containers  would be delivered and missed collections cleared by today (Friday 2  November).

It is now evident that  Serco won’t hit this target, so here’s a statement from Derbyshire Dales  District Council’s Director of Community Services, Peter  Foley:

We are hugely disappointed with the performance  of our waste contractors, Serco.   But whilst we appreciate they  have experienced serious issues, the only  thing that matters to us is that our residents receive the service they have  every right to expect.

We are working with Serco on a continual basis to  resolve the problems.   At the highest level, Serco are fully aware that we are holding them  to account and they have responded  with an action plan that includes the use of significant extra  resources.

We know from comments  made to us by local  people that the majority of households  are delighted with the new service  as it enables them to recycle more at home than ever before.  So when Serco  eventually get it right for everyone, it’s going to be a first class  service.

However, Serco know their performance  to  date is unacceptable and they need to get it right – and soon  – to comply  with their contractual obligations.  They are fully aware we are not  prepared to accept anything less.

Missing ram

One of Ben C’s rams has been missing for the past few days. He is most likely to be found at the top end of the village. He is a large, white faced texel tup, with a faint red flock mark over his shoulders.

You can contact Ben on 0781 385 7014.

Update: The ram has been found! Click here for the full story…

Even though it is half term, Circuit Training is still on tomorrow (Thursday), at 6pm in the Memorial Hall.

Halloween frights await!

Ahoy there, landlubbers: remember the cribbage board reputedly owned by Lord Nelson? It brought £1,900, hammer plus buyer’s premium, which I would venture to say guarantees a watertight provenance.

In a quandary about what on earth to buy your friends and relations for Christmas? Fear ye not, for help is at hand in the form of “The Pippa Middleton Xmas Gift Guide for Commoners.” Pippa has vehemently denied exploiting her royal connections to break into this extremely lucrative market. Her merchandise includes: replica royal crowns, fake corgi whoopsies, Duchy of Cornwall luxury hampers, Sandringham Pheasant paté with truffles, ermine-lined House of Windsor wellies, Queen Victoria’s secret lingerie, Duke of Edinburgh Xmas crackers (containing a paper top hat, a Highgrove haggis and a gaffe), signed copies of the ”Princess Anne Book of Hairstyles”, Prince Edward’s ”My Time in the Royal Marines”, Prince Andrew’s ”Budget Travel” and  ”How to Get More for Your House” and Prince Harry’s “A History of the House of Hangover”.

Legion Harvest Festival – Thank you!

On behalf of the Legion, I would like to say many, many thanks to everyone who was involved with, and who supported yesterday’s harvest festival.

Lots of people generously gave up their time, donated produce and spent their money!!! As a result we managed to raise £350 for the Welfare Fund!

Weather Stats: October 21st to 27th

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:

Quite a good forecast last week; we did indeed have a wet Monday as predicted, although the rest of the week was probably drier than I thought it would be. Temperatures have dropped a few degrees in the last couple of days, with a real feeling of Autumn pervading.

It looks like the first half of next week will be reasonably dry, although it may start wet tomorrow and clear up as the day goes on. Generally the weather pattern is unsettled and we may see more blustery conditions from Wednesday onwards. The current forecast for Halloween is quite windy, with blustery showers which will hopefully blow a few witches off course (Val and Nia please note).

Have your say on public speakers at Authority meetings
The Peak District National Park Authority is seeking residents’ views on proposals for a fairer system of public speaking at Authority meetings.

From 2000 the Authority has allowed any number of people up to three minutes to address a committee, but recent meetings have sometimes had more than 20 speakers for one agenda item, leading to very lengthy sessions, unequal viewpoints and delays to decision-making.

Now the Authority is considering limiting the time taken up by public speaking to allow members to focus on important decisions. They propose to equalise the number of speakers, with up to three supporters and three objectors per item, with a time limit of three minutes each. Continue Reading »

VOLVO S80 Diesel Car for Sale

We have received the following from Terry Pickard:

I am selling my very reliable VOLVO S80 diesel car, 2004 in the year and it has only done 27,000 miles from brand new, yes only 27,000 k.

It has half leather with alloy wheels. It will do around 48 miles to the gallon and it is quite a powerful beast, with 167bhp at your disposal.

It has around 5 months road tax left on the vehicle and has very good tyres all round; the spare has never been on the car. Virtually a brand new car for very little money.

If you’re interested please call me (Terry) on 390360. I am looking for a little more money than book price because of the mileage.

Evie’s Artistic Afternoons

Paul B writes:

Come on, let’s have you… it’s time to get your sticky-back plastic & Fairy Liquid bottles at the ready and get creative at Evie’s artistic afternoons at the Memorial hall from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Thursday afternoons

…or if you’d just like some company and a chinwag with a cuppa and bickies, come along and see whats cracking off.

The first one was enjoyed by all who attended. A contribution towards the hire charges is £3.00-ish, but will get less as more people attend.

You might discover a hidden talent, who knows? Be there or be square.
