In milk! If anyone can help with suggestions as to what I can do with my excess of high quality, very locally produced raw Jersey milk, please ring me on 191 or email the blog team. What you thought was a friendly wave is, in fact, a signal of desperation!! Fiona H

With the jet stream running a little further north, this next week should be drier and milder than last, but rather cloudy.

Why not get fit in 2012
all levels of fitness are welcome as you work at your own pace
Parwich Memorial Hall – Thursdays 18:00 – 18:55
Get FREE entry into any reMARKable U Circuit Training class when it’s your first time. Try it out for FREE then £4.00 entry per session there after.
reMARKable U circuit Training classes have been running in the Memorial Hall since the October 2010. The aim by Mark of reMarkable U was to set up circuit classes in local villages bringing a fun exercise programme to them, making it easier and more convenient to exercise. The circuit classes are still going strong seeing the same participants coming back for more while bringing new participants with them.
All you need is suitable exercise trainers/clothing and a bottle of water. There will be a medical form to fill out at the first session on arrival and anyone over the age of 14 is welcome no matter what your level of fitness is. Under 14’s should be accompanied by an adult.
Contact Mark for any of your questions about reMARKable U.

A meeting was held on 3rd January 2012 to discuss the preparations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Our celebrations will be held on the extra Bank Holiday on Tuesday 5th June 2012.
A number of suggestions were raised by those that attended: Denis and Pauline Laycock, Nia Linnell, Matthew Harrison and Caroline Healy.
Initial ideas are:
To hold a tea time street party on the stretch of road from the pub down towards Blanche Meadow (so that this stretch of road could be closed off)
Entertainment for the children
Live Music
Fireworks
Beacon lighting on Monday 4th June to join with the national beacon lighting and further beacon and fireworks on Tuesday 5th
Lamplit Parade, using torches, tea lights or candles, led by an accordion player
BBQ
Celebration cake
Commemorative mugs
A letter will be sent to every household to request a voluntary contribution towards the costs and the Village Societies will also be approached.
These are just initial thoughts and we would greatly appreciate any suggestions and help to help take the plans further.
The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on 15th February in Parwich Memorial Hall
Everyone is welcome to attend so that we can plan together how to make this a memorable and enjoyable village celebration.

Denis Laycock Chair of the Carnival and Recreation Committee

Just a reminder that Suttons orders are due with me by this Friday 6th January. Thanks to all of you who have already returned them. Helen P
Each year the Parwich and District Horticultural Society order seeds from Suttons on behalf of their members. By doing this together we are eligible for a bulk order discount. This year the discount is likely to be 40%, but could be as high as 52% if we maintain the level of interest shown last year. The discount on all other catalogue items such as plants and seed potatoes has been increased to 15%. For more details click here to read the original post.

The Derby Telegraph recently published this photo of the Parwich Ladies Football team in 1960 (click to enlarge).
On the back row, from left: Christine Weston, Shirley Gibbs, Jean Calladine, Brenda Brownlee, Mary Edge, Hazel Calladine, Veronica Twigge.
On the front row: Maud Evans, Evelyn Chadwick, Carol Allen, Phyllis Allsop.
The “Little Sealed Packages” blog has also written about this photo. The blogger’s parents grew up in Parwich, and she has some further questions to ask about the photo. (Coincidentally, the Webster family are also mentioned, who have also been the subject of a recent query.)
Perhaps one of our readers would be able to reply to her?
Finally, from our own blog archives, we also have a poster advertising a ladies’ football match in 1938. Ladies’ football must have been a long-standing tradition in the village; could the tradition ever be revived?

We have received this note of thanks from Heather H:
I would like to thank everyone who bought biscuits, jewellery and bread over the Christmas period, helping me to fundraise for Childreach International. In particular, my 24hr fundraise made £100. To get the London Underground collection permit I needed to raise the most in my group. Well, I raised the 2nd highest amount putting me in a good position if there are any spare permits available. Thanks for helping me!This is probably a good opportunity for me to explain the reason for all this fundraising. I’m studying at Nottingham University, and have signed up for an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this July. It involves raising £2,450 for the charity Childreach International before I even begin to climb the mountain itself! This charity helps children in countries like Tanzania, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. It operates in 3 main areas: health, education and human rights. It works with local communities to help set up projects. For more information go to www.childreach.org.uk.I have a lot of fundraising ideas which some of you have already supported (thanks again!). In addition anyone wishing to sponsor me should go to my BT Donate page (https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/heatherhughes1) where you can also follow my progress. I am really excited at the prospect of the double challenge of fundraising and the climb itself!

Debbie W writes:
I don’t know if anyone is having a fund raiser anytime soon which will include a second hand book stall?
If so, I’ve had a bit of a clear out and anyone is welcome to quite a few books I’ve cleared out (a mix of modern and classics), otherwise I’ll pop them down to a charity shop.
Thanks,
Debbie W, phone 568

This is the 4th year some of us have got together to do a Christmas morning walk. Everyone brought a contribution for the “picnic”, there were plenty of nibbles of lots and lots of mulled wine.
Thanks to JF-S for the photos

Andy explained that the Bible tells us that Jesus came into this world as a light into the darkness.
The questions is… What type of light?
In these photos, Andy is attempting to answer this question using a home made flame thrower!

Graham Johnson has received an email from Paul Mannion, who was the 2010 winner of the Parwich Hill Race. Paul says:
I was just wondering if you could help me with something, or at least point me in the right direction?
I was at a race over at the Roaches today and was talking to a guy called Matt Jones from Ripley who I know from races, and we were catching up etc.
He won The Parwich Hill Race this year (2011) and said he didn’t get the trophy, as it had gone missing again !!
Now, I gave back the trophy this year, so was shocked to hear it went missing in the first place…
It would be great if we could reunite him with the missing trophy.
Could you put me in touch with the relevant people or ask around I would be very grateful.
If you have any information, please contact Graham directly (344), or mail the blog team at parwich.hotmail.co.uk.

Rob Francis writes:
You seek them here, you seek them there. For 25 years, they have mysteriously appeared then disappeared at Christmas.
This is a unique Parwich tradition inherited from Biggin-by-Hartington through Ambrose Wilton and Jack Cundy, who as boys traipsed along the railway, returning via The Newhaven Inn – back in 1936.
Click here to view photographs from the last 25 years (or click here for a full-screen slideshow).
This includes the guizers’ famous meeting with Paris Hilton (look at the smile on her face) and the first photograph that appeared in The Ashbourne Telegraph in 1985.
The guizers in all their shape-shifting forms wish you a Happy Christmas.
