Field barns are an important feature of the White Peak landscape that surrounds our villages. As patterns of land holdings have changed (the village farm houses serving scattered fields are now gone, replaced by larger farms with houses and farm buildings on the land being farmed) and farming methods have improved, these fine buildings have become redundant, with many falling into disrepair. Here are some of the field barns that can be seen around Parwich Hill (just these local photos by Peter T):

A new book entitled “Field Barns of the Peak District” by Sheila Haines celebrates these buildings and challenges us to find new uses for them before they are irreparable ruins. Parwich.org would welcome any further photographs of the barns in our local parishes, perhaps to created a gazetteer and photographic record of those in Parwich, Eaton & Alsop and Ballidon.

Wanted: help with Pippin!

lilac time 002Just when I was thinking everything was going well, Pippin has decided that she doesn’t want to be milked! If anyone could spare me about 10 minutes in a morning around 8 am or to suit, to hold her tail up while I milk her I should be very grateful. I am hoping this would only be for a couple of weeks.

According to details on the PDNPA website, planning permission has been granted for two wind turbines at Hill Top Farm, each at a tower height of 24.5m, with a further 9m rotor radius. This is smaller than the originally rejected proposal, which measured 48.4m from base to blade tip. Note also that this is a time-limited consent, which expires after 25 years.

Missing Ram Returns

The missing ram Gary (or is it Bary?) was spotted this afternoon by Joanne J. Although somewhat taken aback by the size of the tup, this intrepid detective secured him in the garden of Hallcliffe until Sandra C was able to attend the identity parade. He has now been taken back into custody.

Asked for an explanation of events Bary (or is it Gary?), replied with a sheepish “no comment”. It was noted however that whatever he had been tup to over the last few days had left him somewhat lame. Is he pulling the wool over our eyes or do ewe know where he has been?

Sandra would like to thank Joanne, Paul and Caroline for their help.

Due to concerns raised about potential noise levels in the village, we conducted a further more extensive assessment which is quite technical but does conclude that noise may only be faintly audible under rare conditions, i.e. downwind at high wind speeds.

We hope to submit a planning application within the next 10 days.

More than 20 people from Parwich and Tissington met up in the Bletch Brook Valley with representatives from the National Park, to look at the wild flowers and find out about the elusive water vole.

Some of the best wild flower meadows are owned by Parwich United Charities (see photo below) and wonderfully managed by local farmers who over recent years through positive husbandry have brought back mixed hedgerows and increased the number of flowers dramatically. The reddish brown hue is bentgrass which follows the ridges of the ridge and furrow system in this field. One farm alone in the valley has over 200 mature trees, including 17 different species, this is considered remarkable for such a small area.

Thank you to Lynn Burrow, our local ranger for organising last night’s delightful free walk and to the experts, for their fascinating insight to the area and to all the farmers who look after this valley.

We have received the following open letter to all village residents, from Robert Gosling at Hill Top Farm. There will be a meeting, to which you are all invited, to discuss the proposal plan which he outlines below, pop into the Memorial Hall anytime between 6pm and 9pm on Tuesday 17th May.

Dear Resident,

You may be aware of my family farm at Hill Top Farm, either because you know me or a member of my family, or because you have walked or driven past the farm.

My family have in fact farmed in the Peak District for over 100 years, and from Hill Top Farm in particular since 1963. We have one full time and one part time employee to help my family manage a dairy herd of some 400 cows with 400 beef/follower cattle, and we farm approximately 765 acres of land.

The family are extremely interested in the environment. The farm is in the Uplands Entry Level Stewardship Scheme. The farm has also participated in a number of Peak Park Farm and Countryside initiatives for over 20 years (including over 2km of dry stone wall restoration, tree planting, daleside management etc). Linked to the environmental management of the farm, the business is also in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone and the family have therefore invested in precision slurry application equipment to significantly reduce the use of artificial fertilizer and make better use of the farm’s own natural slurry.
