Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #77

Dear Possums,

Air rage incidents, caused by heavy binge drinking sessions prior to holiday flights, have seen a dramatic decrease lately mainly as a result of stringent new controls introduced at Gatwick airport. A spokesman told Weedkiller’s Travel Reporter that passenger confidence had received a most welcome boost, now that the recommended time between ‘bottle and throttle‘ for pilots has been greatly extended.

Ashbourne is well on track to becoming ‘fast food capital of the East Midlands’ with more outlets in the pipeline, including controversial plans for the now closed book shop in Dig St, but that’s another story.

Two guests have absconded from the Sudbury open prison leisure complex. John Harry and Charlie Casey have been missing for over a week. Harry is described as 6′ 1″, short brown hair and beard and has an Irish accent. Casey 5′ 10″, with short brown hair, blue eyes and an Irish accent. Anyone with any idea of their whereabouts should not approach the pair, but call 101 with an Irish accent immediately.

Missing Post?

We have contacted customer services at Royal Mail delivery and discovered there has been an incident in the Alfreton area whereby post has been wilfully delayed by an employee. Some of the mail concerned was for DE6 and may explain why certain items of post we were expecting have not arrived.
Apparently the mail has been recovered and will be posted out. That is all I can tell you but maybe might explain why others in Parwich have not received expected mail.

Any Missing Comments?

When readers comment on posts here at parwich.org they go through the WordPress spam filter. Normally this is very efficient, but recently a number of genuine comments have been sent to the spam folder. This should not be a problem as we, the Blog Team, try to check the spam folder at least once a day, though it may mean the comment is slower than normal to appear on the Blog.

However, if you have made a comment which seems to have disappeared do email us at parwich@hotmail.co.uk to ensure we check for it.

Thank you,

The glamour of the Edwardians reached Parwich on Friday when Notty Hornblower, vintage fashion collector from Hope House Costume Museum, Alstonfield, staged a stunning catwalk show themed around the clothes worn during the Downton Abbey era and the First World War. Each outfit was modelled beautifully, accompanied by exquisite accessories and fascinating stories about the acquisition of each item. The evening, organised by Cheryl, was to commemorate the start of WW1 with the profits going to the Poppy Appeal and the Memorial Hall Fund.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Thankfully we got back to winning ways, albeit by the smallest of margins in one match, but a win is a win as they say and anything was better than Christians and lions like last week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Home – Whitworth Park – 13 May

As I said anything was preferable to last week’s embarrassment. We had a really good match. It was two games each, Edith and Rick producing the best score for us, as usual winning 21 – 10. Sue A and John B also scraped a win. At one point they were 15 – 5 down, but came out on top 21 – 20 and that point made all the difference as the final result was Parwich 73, Whitworth 72. Having plummeted from the giddy heights of top of the league to seventh, hopefully this win will halt the slide. It will need to as we are due to play Youlgrave on their green next week. It could be another massacre!

  • Next match – Away – Youlgrave – 20 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Home – Matlock Bath – 15 May

There are some games that even if you lose you can enjoy the games and your opponents, playing Matlock Bath is one such fixture, add to that a good win as well and what more do you want out of life. After the three doubles we were 7 points behind, with Dennis E and Audrey B leading the way 21 – 11. Again our singles players did us proud winning 5 out of the six games. Tony A, Harry B, and Dawn A showing how it should be done. The score for the singles was a convincing 86 – 52 to Parwich giving an overall result of 132 to Parwich 105 to Whitworth Park. Good game equally good company.

  • Away – Chatsworth – 22 May – 1.45pm.

The village annual meeting takes place next Wednesday and the Bowls Club will be there trying to drum up new members. Come and have a word next week.

Art Competition

Artists are being urged to get creative about local life and landscapes and enter Derbyshire County Council Open Art Competition.

The competition has been running for 32 years and is open to amateur and professional artists of all ages.

Entries should show why Derbyshire is special. The subjects can be landscapes, views of a town, local people, representations of local legends or still life. Artists are invited to use a variety of media including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawings, collages, manipulated digital imagery or three-dimensional work.

Our Deputy Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Ellie Wilcox said:

This is a wonderful opportunity for local artists of all ages and abilities to celebrate their county and we are always delighted with the quality and range of entries we receive.

“For us it’s also a valuable opportunity to showcase what Derbyshire has to offer to the thousands of visitors and tourists who will see the exhibition this summer.”

Prizes totalling £2,350 − including a £750 first prize − are up for grabs along with the opportunity to display work at our Buxton Museum and Art Gallery which is running the competition.

Artists can submit up to two works which must be handed in to the museum in Terrace Road, Buxton between 10am and 4.30pm on Friday or Saturday June 13 or 14.

An independent panel of four judges will select the winners of 10 prizes, including for sculpture and work by artists aged under 22 and under 16. Visitors will also have the chance to choose their favourite while the exhibition is on − the visitors’ choice will be announced on Friday 1 August.

The exhibition is supported by Tarmac Lafarge and the Friends of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

Entrants can view the rules and prizes and pick up an entry form at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/buxtonmuseum (opens in a new window)

Postal requests can also be made by post by sending a stamped, A5 self-addressed envelope to Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Terrace Road, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 6DA. For more information call 01629 533540 or email buxton.museum@derbyshire.gov.uk

The judges’ selection including the winning pieces will go on display at the museum and art gallery from Saturday 28 June until Friday 5 September.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #76

Hello Possums.

Well what a night (Saturday/Sunday), whilst we were all tucked up safely in our beds, our unsung hero Peter T was locked in mortal combat with the monstrous Hydra, which had breached the portal and was gushing forth with a vengeance from the fetid depths of the underworld. Peter, armed only with a wheelie bin and his enchanted Nike sandals, with no thought for himself, bravely kept the beast at bay until help arrived, well done lad.

Other news.

Austria wins Eurovision song contest by a whisker.

Rumours are circulating around Westminster that the long awaited publication of the ‘Chilcott’ enquiry is being purposely delayed until after Labour have lost the next election.

When is a pie not a pie? That is the question. A petition is, as we speak gaining momentum, to the effect that a bowl of stew and a puff a pastry lid, that have only just been introduced prior to serving, is not a marriage made in heaven, and by no means represents a true pie. It is being suggested that this practise is flagrant misrepresentation and transgressors should be punished in the courts. The petition is well on the way to qualify for a reading in the House of Commons, and may even be referred to the upper crust House of Lords.

Raffle Prize Request

We have received the following request from the Memorial Hall Committee:

This Friday sees the Period Fashion Show at the Memorial Hall to commemorate the centenery of the onset of WWI.
The money raised from this event will be split between the Poppy Appeal and the Village Hall Fund.
We are having a raffle to help increase the takings and would be grateful if anybody could donate a prize.

If you could help, please see Cheryl Woolley or any member of the Hall Committee. Alternatively, they call be left at the Parwich Royal British Legion or brought along on the night.

Thank you.

Over the last couple of weeks a dog has been using our garden as their toilet. We have never seen the offending dog hence a round robin plea. The appearance of parcels on all my lawns today has made me see red especially as I stood in one of the piles!!!!!!

We close our gate and our garden is fairly well fenced so the particular dog is fairly agile.

If you suspect it might be yours do try and stop it jumping into my garden.

Many thanks
Sue and Alan Purvis

This post has been created at the request of a reader who was concerned the Parish Council land making up part of The Square off Pump Hill in the centre of Parwich village is to be sold without any public consultation. At the March Parwich Parish Council meeting Item 14 “it was agreed to sell Pump Hill back to the previous owner for the sum of £1“. (This “previous owner” is not named in the minutes, but it is presumed this reference in the minutes is an error as the previous owners have no current connection to the village, see below.) The minutes make no mention of any conditions as to the future use of this land being specified as part of the sale.

This land, in front of Parwich Hall, was originally part of the Parwich Estate. Some time around the 1820s it was made into allotments for use by villagers. The 1843 Tithe Map refers to it as ‘gardens’. The estate was bought by Sir John Crompton-Inglefield in the 1930s. After World War II the allotments went out of use, and Lady Crompton-Inglefield had trees planted here to hide the separately owned garden at the south end of the land, in front of the former Shop, which was then being used to cure deer hides amongst other things.

After the sale of the bulk of the Parwich Estate in the 1970s, this land remained in the hands of Sir John’s heirs, one suspects on the speculation that restrictions on building here might someday be removed. Over a number of years Dorothy L gardened this land on a voluntary basis, and created a very attractive woodland garden, much enhancing this part of the village.

When it came up for auction in the early 2000s, the Village Action Group raised buying it with the then Parish Council. There was strong local support for protecting this land in the heart of the village against any future development. In the light of this a number of potential buyers agreed not to bid at the auction and the land was purchased by the Parish Council.

A number of options then were considered for this land, but local opinion was strongly in favour of Dorothy continuing to garden it for as long as she wished. She has now left the village.

What are your views on the future of this land?

I guess it is telling that, although I reported the previous elections here at parwich.org, in starting to draft this post I could not remember how many Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are sent from the East Midlands, nor the names of any of them. So here is a recap of the sitting MEPs and the PR method used to elect them, as well as the candidates for the up coming May 22nd election.

Peter T

Our sitting MEPs are:

We vote as part of the East Midlands region, which returns five MEPs by closed party list proportional representation. Each party submits a list of up to five candidates indicating their order of preference. Voters then choose political parties, rather than individual candidates. Voters indicate a single preference and parties are allocated seats on a quota system in relation to the proportion of the votes they receive (see About My Vote). A party’s first seat goes to the first candidate on their list, a second seat to their second candidate and so on.

Four of the sitting MEPs are standing again, including Roger Helmer, who in 2012 defected from the Conservatives to UKIP. Here are the parties’ candidate lists, together with links to their websites, where we have been able to identify them:   Continue Reading »

Our Weatherman-in-the-Village says:

More showery weather on the cards for the next few days (but we still can’t measure how much rain!). Looks like it might get a bit more settled towards the end of the week though. Fingers crossed.

Denis (The Menace!)

When I read Margaret’s post heading, (Problem Cat) I was worried at first that she was referring to Jim’s black & white cat, Denis (the menace!!)

He is only about 9 months old and Jim rescued him, in Birmingham, about 3 months ago. However, he has ended up adopting me (the cat, that is!) & has taken to going to visit people, looking lost & appealing. (He’s very playful & cheeky.)

Fortunately, he has a collar on, though the name tag is a bit confusing because it still has Jim’s Birmingham address on it, with my phone number, for when Jim brought him over here with him at weekends. In the last 2 weeks he has visited the Old Post Office, the School & Lucy B’s, were he had a great time running around her house, playing!

Anyway, thanks (and apologies!) to everyone that phoned me to let me know where Denis was.

Denis is black, with white paws, mouth, whiskers and bib. (He looks quite like ‘Bob’ Deb’s cat.)  If he goes on any more visitations, my number is 01335 390554.
