Legion Christmas Fayre – Sun 9th Dec 4pm

Christmas Parking Concession

The following Christmas parking concession has been announced by DDDC. It takes effect from 1st December.

“Free parking from 2pm throughout December comes on top of residents’ parking concessions which allow local people to park free every day of the year up to 11am and after 4pm. So, over the Christmas period, Dales residents have free parking for 21 hours each day (before 11am and after 2pm).  The aim is to help local people and local traders.”

Free parking extends to midnight each day and motorists are reminded not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles as the lead up to Christmas can also be a choice time for thieves.

Church Christmas Services

The Peak Five website has uploaded details of this year’s Christmas church services. Please click here to view the timetable.

School Christmas Fayre

The staff and children at Parwich Primary School would like you to join them at their Christmas Fayre, on Thursday 29th November 2012, from 6pm to 8pm in the Memorial Hall.

Tickets can be bought in advance for £2.00 each, either directly from the school, or by filling in the order form which most households will now have received through their letter boxes. Admittance on the door is £2.50.

Entry entitles you to a complimentary mince pie, plus a glass of mulled wine, tea, coffee or squash.

This will be an evening full of festive cheer, with a chance to buy lots of Christmas goodies! All monies raised will go to the school.

Too much rain

With all this rain, the birds are hiding away…

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #6

Good Morning. I am sure you will all join me in commiserating with our National Treasure Lord Prescott, who managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in his quest to become Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside. To add insult to injury, he was pipped at the post by a relatively unknown Tory toff. Lady Prescott said “John was especially disappointed at the result, as he had heard that the chips at the Humberside Police headquarters canteen were vastly superior to ones at the House of Lords restaurant.“

Weather Stats: 11th to 17th November

Our ‘Weatherman in the Village’ says:

The unsettled weather returned for the working week as forecast – I’m beginning to like this new established pattern – great weekends and wet and windy weeks – it doesn’t make dragging yourself to work on dark mornings feel so bad! The temperatures through the week were pretty mild. Last night was a good hard frost, and the rest of today (Sunday) looks settled and fine.

We will again return to unsettled weather early next week with rain and mild temperatures returning on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday looks like being the best day of the week at the moment.

A rumour has reached PARWICH.ORG that a certain Parwich resident will be making her television deb-ut tomorrow, on BBC1 from 12.15pm to 1pm, hunting for bargains in Derbyshire. Who could it possibly be?

A new Derbyshire Police Commissioner

The Labour candidate, Alan Charles, was elected as Derbyshire’s first Police and Crime Commissioner. Nationally there was a very low turn out of 15.6%, though locally in Derbyshire Dales it was slightly better at 19.1%.

See the BBC website for the Derbyshire results.

Changes at the Legion….

The Legion is currently undergoing a bit of a face lift and the decorators will be in for the next 2-3 weeks!

Nonetheless it’s ‘business as usual’.

We would like to thank everyone in advance for putting up with a bit of disruption in this ‘in-between’ time.

So far there have been no incidences of ‘ash dieback disease’ in the Peak Park, but the Authority is collecting information on ash woodland, specifically new plantations, where trees have been planted in the last 6 years.  If you have any new ash trees or for general information on how to respond to the current situation please read on for the Peak Park Authority’s advice:  Continue Reading »

November Sunshine At Minninglow

Our roving photographer took a short walk along the High Peak Trail to the Neolithic Burial Chambers up on Minninglow Hill. The low sun and clear air provided a magnificent vista as can be seen in the following photographs.

The acclaimed wildlife artist Esther Tyson is staging an exhibition of recent work in our stunning modern Memorial Hall. Esther lives in Parwich, and the exhibition presents an opportunity for the local community to see her work, as well as serious collectors of wildlife art.

Esther studied at Carlisle College of Art and the prestigious Royal College of Art. She has exhibited in galleries in London and all over the country. She has also received many accolades and awards for her work.

Esther is renowned for work that reflects her intense passion for lengthy study of wild life in its natural habitat. The work she produces evokes a powerful image of the very essence that she experiences in her observations. The exhibition will feature a wide variety of her work, from her local Derbyshire countryside to the mountains of Nepal and recent underwater studies in Dorset.

The exhibition takes place in Parwich Memorial Hall on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November 2012, from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free, and all are welcome!

“We will remember them.”

In Memoriam: Those Who Served.

Weather Stats: November 4th to 10th

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:

Bonfire Night turned out to be as predicted: cold and pretty clear, with the unsettled end to the week that I forecast. This weekend has been very pleasant again, but it doesn’t look like it will last, with tomorrow seeing a return of unsettled conditions which will probably dominate the rest of the week.

Hello Possums!  The Weedkiller Weekly consists of genuine news items from far and wide, unlikely as some may seem, with just a little tweak here and there.

The annual “Eat Bugs For Balls” competition recently took place in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Edward Archibald retained his title as undisputed Maggot and Cockroach Eating Champion, winning a python for his efforts. Unfortunately he collapsed in agony shortly after the presentation and could not be revived by paramedics. The state coroner delivered a verdict of death by misadventure, after a post mortem concluded that his death was most likely due to a dodgy hot dog he had eaten prior to the event.

The NHS is having to arrange for morbidly obese patients to undergo body scans at local zoos, as standard hospital equipment cannot cope with them. Other treatments being considered are elongated neck dislocations, Hipposuction, Elephantiasis, Dingowings, Bi-polar Bear Disorder and Ape-endiceptomies.
