On Friday 14th December from 10.30am the Church will be decorated ready for Christmas. Most of the windows will be dressed by those who regularly do them, but there is plenty more to do.

We hope that there will be plenty of volunteers, you don’t have to be a flower arranger, but just willing to join in.

Tea, coffee and cakes will be available all morning so why not just pop in and see what we are doing and have a cuppa – everyone is welcome.

Other ways you can help

  • Donate foliage from your garden, (especially anything that is variegated, yellow, with berries, seed heads, cones etc) – either pop them into the Church on the Thursday or Friday morning or give one of us a ring and we’ll come round and cut it for you.
  • Would you like to sponsor some flowers – as a dedication, in memorium (or as a memorial) or just because it is Christmas.
  • Any baubles that you are happy to donate.

Please do pop in, for a drink, to have a look, to decorate or to help clear up.

We have received the following message from Carl:

As you may or may not be aware we are currently redecorating the Legion and as part of this I would like to seek out any photos that people may have, that have been taken in the Legion over the years (inside or outside). If you would be happy to donate them or pass them to me to be to be copied, I can assure you they will be well looked after.

The plan is to display them (in a specifically designed frame and cover) in the club on a permanent basis. I do have some already showing the Mummers play in the 80s and some of the Wakes BBQs. There have been so many characters and events over the years in the Club I think it would be nice to remember them this way.

If you have any photos please feel free to call in the Club (photo’s in a marked envelope) or call in and see me at Orchard View – it would be useful to discuss the photos with you to establish who is on them and when they were taken etc.. I look forward to seeing what photos are out there!!!

The redecorating will be coming to an end at the end of this week, in time for the Fezziwigs Christmas Fayre on Sunday 9th Dec, which I hope you will be able to attend. Thank you for all your patience over the last 3 weeks whilst we have had dust sheets and paint tins everywhere.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #8

Thank you to Paul for his latest news ’round-up’:

Hello Possums, Have you opened the first windows of your advent calendars yet and scoffed the little treats inside ?, An arctic cold snap is forecast possibly heralding the coldest winter for a 100 years, it may be worth a wee flutter on it being a white Christmas. Did you know that originally good old St Nicholas, the patron saint of Toys-R ‘Us, was attired in green, that is until Coca Cola marketing got hold of him and dressed him in red.

Whilst on the Xmas theme at the recent Bavarian market in Birmingham more than a few eye brows were raised as the carousel begin to merrily rotate to the theme from the “Dambusters “. The large contingent of German stallholders took no offence and laughed it off. A spokesman from Birmingham City Council said “we have no control over the music and this was a pure coincidence, a one-off you might say“. Next came the themes from “The Great Escape”, “The Battle Of Britain”, “The Heroes Of Telemark “, “Kelly’s Heroes” and “Colonel Bogey”. One German trader asked an English fish monger what was the large fish on his counter, some wise guy shouted “don’t tell him Pike “. “They don’t like it up e’m you know “.  Continue Reading »

Weather Stats: 25th Nov to 1st Dec

weather12Dec1

Our ‘Weatherman in the Village’ says:

Well we got our colder snap at the end of this week as I forecasted last weekend. On my drive to work on Thursday morning there was no sign of any gritted roads – not even the A515, and sure enough, the Radio Derby travel reports were full of cars in ditches and general mayhem on the roads. Now I guess there are two sides to every issue, but at this time of year when there isn’t a build up of salt on the road surface from a winter of gritting, I really don’t understand why it takes so long to get the roads treated when even an amateur meteorologist can forecast a cold snap three days in advance. It’s a really important issue because people’s lives are put in real danger. So if anyone in the council road gritting department is reading this, it would be interesting to know why the gritting is apparently so tardy early in the winter season when it’s really needed most?

OK soapbox removed. On to this week’s outlook…… Continue Reading »

Top Notch Emporium in Hartington

It was Saturday.  The sun was out. The ice had melted. All systems were go! Miguel & Roberto – two top Parwich cyclists – decided to pedal over to Hartington.

Having huffed and puffed their way to the village, they were sorely in need of coffee and calories! Both were bowled over by the fantastic Hartington Village Stores which has had new owners since last January.

20121201_145335_1024x768

The shop is well stocked, offering a meat/deli counter, local specialities, puddings and drinks as well as normal everyday groceries. Laura and Rob were very friendly, keeping the Parwich Cycling Team up to speed with the England/All Blacks score and providing fantastic freshly ground coffee.

The stores was built in 1836 and still retains the feel of an old fashioned grocers. Apparently it survived being blown up by a leaking gunpowder barrel which lifted the roof as high as the top of the church!

Refuelled with a fine huntsman’s pie, Miguel and Roberto found the chug back up to Parwich almost easy!

Please note that Evie’s artistic gatherings at the village hall have been re-scheduled from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm on Thursdays.

There is still plenty of room to join Santa’s little helpers, all beavering away merrily. Cookies, coffee and conversation.

If you are unsure of what you would like to do, there is plenty of advice on hand. See you there.

Policing Priorities

We Want Your Concerns

The Derbyshire Alert community messaging service gives you the opportunity to contribute to the setting of priorities in your neighbourhood.
As you may be aware, each of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams holds a meeting every three months to set priorities, offering the public the opportunity to select what their local police officers and other agencies target. The aim of our e-forum is to make it easier for you to have a say on priorities.

Simply reply by email to trisha.mellor.5197@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk and tell us what you would like your team to target. Your concerns will be sent to the Tissington and Carsington area Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and they will discuss all responses at their next forum meeting which will be held on:
Wednesday 5th December starting at 7.30pm at Carsington School, Carsington.

Each team works in partnership with local agencies, which include parish, town, district and county councils, housing Associations, Derbyshire Youth Service, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Neighbourhood Watch among others, to help keep your area a safe, clean and pleasant place to live and work.
Priorities can include a wide variety of issues, including crime, anti-social or nuisance behaviour, graffiti or vandalism or anything which you feel impacts on the quality of life for you, your neighbours or your business.

You are still more than welcome to attend the meeting if you would prefer to speak to officers in person or you can also call our non emergency telephone number, 101.

You can be reassured that we will listen to your concerns, act on them and maintain our commitment to provide a high quality policing service to everyone in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

PC Virus Scam

Derbyshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service has received reports from consumers who have received a ‘pop-up’ type message on their home computer screen informing them their computer has a virus, and that it may be removed for a fee of £75.

To appear more official, the message purports to be from the Police Central E-Crime Unit, PO Box 36451, London EC2M 4WN.

This is untrue, as the Police would not contact members of the public regarding any potential computer issue nor would they contact them in this manner.

Do not respond to the message and if possible, delete the message.  Please do not attempt to forward it to anyone else as this may spread the problem to more computers.

Unfortunately, the ‘pop-up’ message has potential to lock and freeze your computer.  Derbyshire Trading Standards Service would advise that if this happens, you seek professional help and advice in order to repair your computer.

If you receive the ‘pop-up’ message above, or similar, please notify Action Fraud – a central point of contact for information about fraud and financially-motivated internet crime. Their telephone number is 0300 123 2040.

Good afternoon from windswept and rain-battered Parwich. It’s a good day for snuggling down with a bottle of Baileys Irish Cream, a tin of Quality Street and rattling off those Christmas cards. Bah Humbug!

LONDON: Rihanna, well known for her outrageously revealing stage outfits, has caused controversy with her latest fashion choice: a turquoise top, extravagantly adorned with myriads of ostrich feathers. Animal rights groups suspect that the feathers may have been gathered cruelly. We asked Rihanna for a comment, but she ran off at great speed. When we finally caught up with her, she stuck her head in the sand and refused to come out and speak to us.

Weather Stats: 18th to 24th Nov

Our ‘Weatherman in the Village’ says:

I now have a little more sympathy for the hapless weather person trying to offer long range forecasts. If you recall I predicted Wednesday last week would offer us a small ridge of high pressure and a respite from the constant barrage of low pressure Atlantic fronts which are rattling through at the moment, dominating our weather. Well, the lull did happen, but about 6 hours later than predicted, giving an oasis of settled weather when people would have least noticed on Wednesday. The rest of the Wednesday was horrible and the week as a whole was pretty wet with over two inches of rain over the week.

The unsettled conditions continue, with a brief blustery respite today, but a return to wet and windy conditions later and into Monday. The current stormy conditions will prevail next week. We may experience the odd lull in the wind and rain. In the longer term there is a suggestion of some colder weather to come toward the end of next week.

Legion Christmas Fayre – Sun 9th Dec 4pm

Christmas Parking Concession

The following Christmas parking concession has been announced by DDDC. It takes effect from 1st December.

“Free parking from 2pm throughout December comes on top of residents’ parking concessions which allow local people to park free every day of the year up to 11am and after 4pm. So, over the Christmas period, Dales residents have free parking for 21 hours each day (before 11am and after 2pm).  The aim is to help local people and local traders.”

Free parking extends to midnight each day and motorists are reminded not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles as the lead up to Christmas can also be a choice time for thieves.

Good Morning. I am sure you will all join me in commiserating with our National Treasure Lord Prescott, who managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in his quest to become Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside. To add insult to injury, he was pipped at the post by a relatively unknown Tory toff. Lady Prescott said “John was especially disappointed at the result, as he had heard that the chips at the Humberside Police headquarters canteen were vastly superior to ones at the House of Lords restaurant.“

Weather Stats: 11th to 17th November

Our ‘Weatherman in the Village’ says:

The unsettled weather returned for the working week as forecast – I’m beginning to like this new established pattern – great weekends and wet and windy weeks – it doesn’t make dragging yourself to work on dark mornings feel so bad! The temperatures through the week were pretty mild. Last night was a good hard frost, and the rest of today (Sunday) looks settled and fine.

We will again return to unsettled weather early next week with rain and mild temperatures returning on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday looks like being the best day of the week at the moment.

A rumour has reached PARWICH.ORG that a certain Parwich resident will be making her television deb-ut tomorrow, on BBC1 from 12.15pm to 1pm, hunting for bargains in Derbyshire. Who could it possibly be?
