In despair……..contact Samaritans
January can be a difficult month for many people as the cost of Christmas reflects itself in high bills at a time when money is tight and winter fuel costs are also putting a strain on finances.
If things are beginning to overwhelm you remember Samaritans are available 24 hours a day to give emotional support to anyone in distress or despair or experiencing suicidal feelings. You have nothing to fear by contacting us as our service is totally confidential and non-judgmental. You can get in touch by phoning 01332364444, e mailing jo@samaritans.org or texting 07725909090.
If you would rather talk to someone face to face you can visit our local branch at 110 Burton Rd Derby. This is at the town end of Burton Rd opposite the junction of Burton Rd and Mount Street. We are open to callers most days from 9 am to 3pm and 6pm to 10 pm (no need to make an appointment but please phone before visiting to check that we are open).
We are always seeking new volunteers to train as Samaritans or assist the branch in other ways such as fund raising and admin. We hold ‘no obligation’ information evenings for prospective volunteers every few weeks. If you are interested details are on our website www.samaritans.org/derby

[Reference: BA154 Crime number: 3161/12]
An elderly lady has had her purse taken from her secure handbag while shopping in Sainsburys in Ashbourne at lunchtime on Friday 20th January. It is thought that the offender unzipped the handbag and removed the purse while the lady was distracted.
Officers are advising shoppers to be aware of anyone acting suspicious or getting too close to you, or of people who try to distract you by bumping into you. Report them to shop staff as many shops are linked by the shop watch radio scheme.
Please avoid leaving handbags unattended in shopping trolleys, even for just a moment.
Anyone with information should call Derbyshire police on 101 – quote crime number: 3161/12.
Thank you.

Buxton Division

New website pages have been created by the Peak District National Park Authority to make it easier for residents to make or comment on a planning application.
Responding to feedback from website users all the information on the planning pages has been re-written to be shorter, avoid jargon and make it easier to understand.
The information – which can be seen here – is now organised into four sections covering:
• pre-application advice and guidance, including answers to frequently asked questions
• making a planning application
• commenting on a planning application, reporting a planning breach or providing feedback about planning services
• information about the planning service, planning policies, enforcement issues, minerals and waste issues and the planning committee.
For the first time residents can also search for details of planning applications and any appeals in one place. Continue Reading »

Today (23.01.12) at approximately 3.20pm a white VW van was spotted driving past the school with a man in the passenger seat videoing the school. The incident and registration number have been reported to the police and to the houses near to school; Incident Number: 509. Can I please ask that the community reports any suspicious activity IMMEDIATELY to the police on telephone number 101 quoting the incident number. No works are planned on the school building outside of our normal working day and therefore anything out of the norm should be reported as detailed above.
Thank You
Caroline Rodgers – Headteacher

If your readers are not tired of my tit pictures, here are two more, taken in the wind rain and sun this morning
Posted in Ornithology, Photography | 2 Comments »
Our roving reporter went for a short walk yesterday past the Bradbury’s farm up to the Tissington Trail. It was certainly a bit of a battle as the wind whistled down from Alsop. There were compensations though. Sporadically, the sun peeked out from behind the swirling clouds, bathing the dale in glorious sunshine. Here are a few pictures giving an impression of this blowy afternoon.

Two rather lovely YouTube videos, from Peak District TV & Peak District OnLine, were sent into the Blog.
On a misty morning in the Peak District, the mysteriously named Chrome Hill and its neighbour Parkhouse, near Longnor, are brought to life. Like a weary dinosaur, Chrome Hill appears to be sleeping. The spines on its back are grit stone, tough and hard wearing, but ready for the fight. Both hills have views to die for and the scenery is simply breathtaking.
The majestic Roaches, on the western edge of the Peak District, north of Leek, rise out of the mists revealing a walker’s eye view from the top. The contorted stones are contrasted against the warmth of the sun, the heather a warm burnt amber amongst the bleak grey of the rock, a super area to walk.

Following the successful pilot scheme, the Peak District Award is now open to any schools, within the National Park and beyond, and is suitable for all ages and abilities. To gain the Peak District Award, participants must complete a study plan and keep a record of what they have done to show others, for example, a diary, scrap book, video or a blog.
We are looking for individuals, families or groups to complete the award during National Park’s Week, Monday July 30 to Sunday August 5. If you are up for the challenge contact the Award Team to find out more.
For more information or to apply for the award contact the Award Team on 01433 620373 or learning.discovery@peakdistrict.gov.uk
