THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD
This great, classic film starred Errol Flynn as the swash-buckling and daring hero, with Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, and with Basil Rathbone. It won 3 Oscars including Best Film score for the marvellous music by Erich Korngold. With a budget of $2 million, it was the most expensive film made to date, and one of the first to use the Technicolor process.
Now newly re-mastered from the original print, the superb costumes and sets look stunning; not a film to be missed!

Coffin Well work at the other end of the barn from Yew Tree Well. This year Diane has designed her well as Noah’s Ark. The pictures show a selection of animals, including otters, pandas, butterflies, tortoise, penguin and giraffe.

We work in a barn, which is cold. This year we shared the venue with 18 piglets and two sows.

Some of the youngsters, James and Catherine Carr and school friend Jada.

I even brought family over from America to lend a hand: Judy from North Carolina.

Today is the final day and we concentrated on filling the sides with parsley and conifer and we were finished by lunchtime.

The design for our Well this year is St George and the Dragon and work continued on this portion of the board for the rest of the afternoon. Continue Reading »

Robert Gosling posted this as a comment.
Many thanks to those of you who attended our display on 17th May, we were very pleased with the discussions and conversations on the night. Many of you have filled in questionnaires and returned them to us. These, along with the posts on the blog have given us a range of questions, comments and suggestions which we will respond to once we have got silaging out of the way. In the meantime please continue to return the questionnaires or leave comments and suggestions on the blog. We will post the results of these by the 17th June on Parwich.org
You can access a copy of this questionnaire, in Word format, by clicking here.
You can either print out a copy and deliver it to Robert Gosling at Hill Top Farm, Parwich (DE6 1QE), or you can save and edit the document, then email it to robert_gosling@btconnect.com.

This morning we had plenty of volunteers working on the design, some carried on the positioning of the camomile heads, which has meant we are well ahead of ourselves. Today sees the start of the main board. Margaret has drawn the picture onto paper and then Helen transfers the design onto the clay. Helen and her Mum will then spend the next two days creating the wonderful focal point for this well dressing.

I begin adding some of the colour to the boards that surround the main design. The petals we are using this year are mainly carnations and some hydrangeas. Petals are placed on the clay starting from the bottom, overlapping and working upwards, so that a tiled effect is created. If it rains then the water is more likely to run off, instead of getting trapped in the petals.
The petal design below should give you a clue as to what Yew Tree Well Dressing is all about.

The design is drawn onto paper, pricked out and then outlined with a metal pointer on the clay, so it is easy for us to see where to outline in coffee beans and black knobs.

The coffee beans are always positioned with the rounded edge facing outwards. This year we had to outline more in coffee beans because the black knobs or alder cones were unusually large. Once this has been finished we started filling out the background and this year we are using thousands, of camomile flower heads, and they are tiny.

The effect is certainly dramatic. Continue Reading »

Major Benjamin Ingham has sent us this latest post having recently returned to Afghanistan following 2 weeks rest and recuperation. Ben says it was great to return to Parwich and was delighted to receive positive comments on his posts to us.
Summer is finally upon us and over the space of a few weeks the heat has risen considerably. Summer also marks the arrival of ‘fighting season’ when the insurgent fighters return to Afghanistan from their winter bed-down locations, usually within the security of the mountains and valleys hills of the Pakistan border region. Eager to demonstrate their intent to continue the insurgency campaign the rise in attacks increases considerably and, therefore, no coalition camp is exempt from increased security measures. The only time you are not within arms distance of your issue rifle is when you are in the gym or running within the relative security of the camp perimeter. Unfortunately, a rifle does little to deter the insurgents from mounting IDF (indirect fire) attacks against us. Additionally, in a separate attack the tragic death of 7 US members of camp came as a great loss.
Although it took a while to track him down, I finally managed to meet up with another Parwich villager, Nettle (Jonathon or Larry) Foden, for a brew and a chat. Tucked away in a small compound in the bowels of one of the largest, dustiest military camps in Afghanistan, over 2500 thousand miles from Parwich, we swapped tales of village life and our respective military experiences to date. We had originally made contact through Parwich.org but had we walked past one another in uniform I am sure we would never had recognized one another. Although he has spent a majority of life within the military, on numerous operational deployments, Nettle is still passionate about Parwich and village life in general. Despite us both being ‘outsiders’ we agreed that him having spent 40 years and me 30 years living in Parwich that we could almost categorise ourselves as Parwich ‘locals’. We marked the occasion with a photo for Parwich.org and a promise to meet again when the opportunity arose.
Over the last few weeks I have been making a concerted effort to try and put on some weight. The change of location, monotony of the same meals, irregular working hours and heat and general stress had all taken their toll on my eating habits and I have been steadily losing weight for the last 3 months. For the first time in many years I have been able to see my ribs and the arrival of a homemade fruitcake was gladly received which, between the members of the office, was quickly devoured – thanks Mum!

Two good wins this week.
Tuesday league
24 May – Away – Wirksworth:
The green at Wirksworth is probably the biggest in the league and is very difficult to play on, however, we had one of our best wins against them this week. We managed to win three games to their one giving us an overall score of 80 to 66. This has put us up to third in the league.
Next match 31 May – Home – Bakewell.
Thursday Friendly league
26 May – Away – Matlock Park:
Following on from the great win last week against Tideswell we kept up our winning ways with a win in the Park. We were short of players because of holidays but we won the doubles games and did really well in the singles. The overall score was 126 to Parwich 110 to Matlock. We had managed to climb a couple of places following last weeks win so this result could move us up another place, although we are still in the bottom half of the league.
Next match 2 June – Home – Whitworth Park.
The friendly match against Ashbourne Park was very enjoyable. They are a nice bunch of people. We are having another friendly this Sunday against the other Ashbourne club at home this week. The informal game starts around 2.00pm
Don’t forget Monday nights 6.30.

Lesley Bott has sent this email in.
A black and white cat appeared at the buildings on my field around 3 ½ weeks ago. It was (and still is) in good condition and is friendly and obviously used to people. (Been someone’s pet.) I have been feeding it for the last 3 weeks or so, after it had been there for a couple of days.
I think the cat is a female and is quite a big cat and unevenly marked. (Black splodge over one eye.)
Please could you give me a call on 390554 if you know whose it is?
P.S. It is not the cat that has recently appeared on the ‘lost’ posters around Carsington. That one is back with its relieved owner.

Parwich artist Esther Tyson is working on a project to immortalise the seahorses of Dorset in art – but first of all, she has to learn to swim underwater. Esther’s project diary continues below…
I have not been under water for six weeks, due to an inner ear infection. But now, rested, all is set!
The plan is to wade through the PADI Open Water Manual (along with DVDs), which will guide me through the theory of scuba diving and the safety aspects. Throughout this book there are mini-quizzes and knowledge reviews, all of which are to be completed by the start of the course.
Lou, who will be my instructor, has filled me in with the basic plan. The initial dives will be in the local pool, to learn a variety of scuba diving skills. These are called ‘Confined Dives’. They will last from four to six hours daily, over four days. The following two days will be open water sea dives. All the skills learned and practised in the pool will be assessed in the open water environment during these dives.
The first two open water dives will be at Swanage Pier (with a very early start!) These will take us to a depth of three to four metres. The last two open water dives will be in Vobster Quay in Somerset. This is an inland quarry with a depth of 37 metres (121 feet).
If all goes well, the following week will be down to Studland… and drawing seahorses!

We would like to thank Nia L for informing us that the new Parish Elections will be held on Thursday 23rd June. Notice of election was sent out by Derbyshire Dales and this notice should have been posted on the board on Wednesday 18th May.
As of 11am this morning, no notice has appeared. We have been told that the notice is currently being driven to the village and will be posted this afternoon.
The nomination forms must arrive at Matlock by midday on Thursday – by appointment only
or Ashbourne, tomorrow between 10am-1pm
Concern has been expressed to Derbyshire Dales at the short notice that potential new councillors have to access and return completed forms, due to the late appearance of the notice. Julie Booth, who is responsible for elections at Derbyshire Dales, assured us this morning that if anyone wishes to stand, they will do everything possible to help. Please make your initial request via their help line (01629 761267) and only ring Julie B (01629 761267) if further assistance is required.
We would like to hear from anyone who encounters any difficulties in receiving or submitting their papers. Currently Jane H (413) has one spare nomination paper.

Amanda Beddows has sent us the following message:
I am one of two Parent Governors currently sitting on the Governing Body of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, and would like to take this opportunity to let local parents know that, should they have any concerns or comments either as parents of children already attending the school, or about to commence their education there, that my responsibilities include raising pertinent issues to the school, voiced by parents, at regular meetings of the Governing body. In particular, I would welcome any questions parents may have regarding the current proposals to change the status of the school to an Academy Trust. Following consultation meetings with various authorities and parents, the Department of Education granted the school permission to proceed (last week) with the anticipated change taking place in August to maximise the financial benefits this is likely to incur.
In order for the process to commence, a vote in favour is required from the Governing Body, due to sit for this purpose on Tuesday May 24th. As a parent representative I would like to ensure that my vote represents the wishes of parents in the area as far as possible therefore I would welcome any comments any parents would like to make at this stage and also address any questions relating to the change in status which remain outstanding. Whilst I may be unable to answer some queries myself I am able to ask appropriate members of the Governing Body and Senior Management team on parents’ behalf. Any queries can be sent to me via email at home (amanda beddows at yahoo dot co dot uk) or work (php07ab at sheffield dot ac dot uk) or by telephone (626) and treated in strict confidence.
Any other queries relating to more general issues are also welcome, discussion of these is likely to be postponed until after the emergency meeting next week and take place at the following full Governors meeting on June 20th. My particular interest as a member of the Staffing and Curriculum sub-committee is Science and Maths so any concerns or comments relating to the delivery of these subjects are very welcome.
Many thanks
Amanda Beddows, Hallgates
