The recent poll here at parwich.org indicates some 75% are in favour of the principle of 20mph speed limits in residential areas, with the following thinking it would be a good idea for our local villages:

  • Pikehall 70%

These are the results so far (recorded at 4pm Sunday 27th Sept).

Derbyshire County Council’s consultation on the idea of 20mph speed limits in some (as yet unspecified) residential areas in the County ends next Wednesday (30th September). Click here if you want to find out more about the consultation or participate on line.

The Council plan to enter into further consultation with any neighbourhoods if they consider introducing specific schemes. However this is something that has been raised a number of times in the past both with Parwich Parish Council and here at Parwich.org, so what do you think?

We encourage you to respond directly to DCC’s consultation, but we will also forward any comments added to this post and responses to the polls below to the Council next Wednesday.

Praise for Alsop Hospitality

As an Alsop myself, I made a backpacking trip in 2008 across Europe, and had to stop at Alsop en le Dale. I was peaking over the fence of the hall when a woman asked if she could help me. Understandably looking suspicious, I explained my situation. She showed me the church because I had previously not pushed hard enough on the door, and presumed it locked. The woman lived in the farmhouse right next to the church and offered to let me come to her home for tea. She made my trip to Alsop en le Dale spectacular. I wonder if there’s a way to send a thank you note to the kind woman that I met that day, as well as make a small contribution to the church.

Thank you,

Michael Alsop

Thank you to Mike H for this account and photos of today’s ‘Tea & Cakes’ in Alsop Churchyard:

Despite being short-staffed, volunteers at Alsop-en-le-Dale manned a stall brimming with cakes, jams and chutney today in the churchyard of St Michael & the Angels. Nothing could compare with basking in the spring sunshine supping a refreshing cuppa and tucking into a slice of home-made cake.

If you missed today, there will be three other opportunities on upcoming bank holiday Mondays. This year they will be on 5th May, 26th May and 25th August. We recommend you make a note in your diaries!

The first swallows arrive

The swallows have put in appearances in both Parwich

Summer must be on the way. Our first male swallow returned to Blanche Meadow on Thursday April 10th – unfortunately I was away and missed it. With luck the rest should follow shortly and I’m sure JFS will be around to record them so watch this space.

Patti

and Alsop en le Dale

Just spotted my first swallow of the year up at Alsop, exactly one day before my first sighting last year. Male, alone for now, no doubt leading the charge ahead of the others (and the house martins of course). Swifts to look forward too around the end of the month.

I never cease to be impressed by the epic achievement of these birds in navigating the long and arduous flight from Southern Africa. And what a joy it is too, notwithstanding the rainy evening.

To celebrate, I’m re-posting this:

The book ‘Rails to Ashbourne’ by Howard Sprenger is now published by Kestrel Railway books (click here for details). It contrasts the older Uttoxeter to Ashbourne line with the relatively more recent Ashbourne to Buxton line, now the Tissington Trail. Obviously this latter had a major local impact and much of the information and pictures in the book relate to our area. (If any of our readers get a copy we would be pleased to post a review of the book focusing on the nearby sections.)

Peace & Beauty

It sometimes takes a fresh eye to provide a reminder of the loveliness that surrounds us here in the Peak District. We are very grateful to Anthony who has sent us this moving video featuring scenes from the area, accompanied by some well chosen music by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

We recommend you put the video on full screen by clicking the symbol in the bottom right of the video box below and sit back and enjoy a musical and visual treat.

The video contains a scene taken in Alsop-en-le-Dale where Anthony has recently moved. You can find more of Anthony’s work on his YouTube channel using the link below. Anthony has largely used the music of English composers such as Gerald Finzi, Vaughan Williams and Michael Tippett. The Peak District featuring prominently as slide images.
