PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
It can happen to any team, look how Manchester United have slumped! Only one league match this week, thank goodness. Heaven knows what our score would have been if we had to play twice.
Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Buxton Park – 6 May
So you can’t win them all. To say we lost this week would be an injustice to Buxton. It was carnage. Edith and Rick played out of their little skins otherwise I doubt if we would have got to double figures. It really was that bad. Anyway I will not give details of the result as I do not want the information for all to see on Parwich’s worst ever result as it will scar the participants for life. WE ARE NO LONGER TOP OF THE LEAGUE!! We are at home next week. Hopefully we will be better, we certainly can’t do any worse, or can we?
- Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 13 May – 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League
No league match this week instead we played our club Square Robin competition, which is a variation of a Round Robin, but with corners (you will have to work it out for yourselves). Although the weather was unkind to us towards the end of the contest, it was a very good afternoon and two new names will appear on the trophy, Tony A and John B. Next week back to the league.
- Home – Matlock Bath – 15 May – 1.45pm.
On Sunday we are due to play another Club competition, the Open Singles. The fun starts at 2.00pm. Why not come down and join us.

Does anyone know the owner of a short haired, brown tabby unneutered Tom cat? This cat comes to my house most days and is becoming quite aggressive towards my neutered female cats. My worry is that because he is an unneutered Tom he may be carrying the feline leukaemia virus and/or the feline AIDS virus both of which can be transmitted to cats with whom he has fights or by mating with unneutered female cats. Neither disease has a cure, although cats can be vaccinated to protect them from feline leukaemia.
Is this cat causing problems elsewhere in the village?

A personal note:
Is anyone else having problems with their e-on electricity bills? I received, this lunchtime, an electric bill for the last quarter, based apparently on actual readings, that amounts to well over twice the normal charges for the full year. This would mean I have increased my consumption some eight fold. This is for a one-roomed cottage, in a very mild winter, when I had been away for nearly four weeks of that time. A near neighbour reports they are currently in dispute with e-on in a similar situation.

The class is run by Sue Purvis ( Pilates Foundation Qualified Teacher), it is chair based, and aims through gentle movements and exercises to improve functional movement, balance and posture. Yesterday 25 members of the PDHS visited two inspiring gardens near Northwich in Cheshire.
Thank you Glynis for this report:
The morning was spent at Bluebell Cottage Garden, tucked away over a narrow canal bridge in the heart of the countryside which presented the coach driver with his first challenge of the day. The island beds contained many unusual perennials some of which were available to tempt us in the attached nursery.
We then continued just a few miles down the road to Stonyford Cottage Garden and nursery. Here we enjoyed a tasty lunch, whilst the rain came down. Luckily there was a break in the showers and we could explore the beautiful, tranquil garden set around a series of pools. The candelabra primulas were fantastic.
The next trip is on Wednesday 16th July, combines a visit to Winterbourne Gardens in the morning. This is one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa, with a beautiful walled garden, colour themed borders, glasshouses, rock garden and stream side planting. We will then go on to the nearby Birmingham Botanic garden for the afternoon, which contains plants from all corners of the world, arranged in glasshouses, herbaceous borders, rockeries etc, there is something for everyone!
The price (includes coach fare and entry to both gardens):
– members £18. (£16 concessions),
– non members £22 ( £20 concessions)
The coach will leave Parwich at 9.15 am, and return at approx 6 pm. To book a place please contact Glynis on 390561, £5 deposit required, full amount payable by 8 July.

Hello Possums.
Well I must tell you there was a profound atmosphere of gloom and despair at Weedkiller’s main offices earlier in the week, as news of George Clooney’s engagement to some flibberty giblet or other filtered through. Myrtle our long serving tea lady was unconsolable, even at the tender age of 83 she never gave up on her dream that George would one day gallop in on his great white charger and whisk her away. Myrtle has seen ‘Gravity’ 72 times, and on one occasion camped out for three nights outside the Dorchester in London to catch a glimpse of George attending the Cinema and Television Awards, but alas she nodded off, prior to him rolling up in his limo and running the red carpeted gauntlet of screaming fans, and missed him completely. But never say die Myrtle is optimistic that the engagement will only last as long as one of Greg Wallace’s restaurants, and he will soon be back on the market again.
Weedkiller’s Film and Television Reviewer attended the premier of ‘Twelve Years a Slave‘ recently, but reported that it was far too long and drawn out, so as a result left halfway through, after six years.

Apologies for the lack of rain data – my rain gauge has given up, and awaits repair.
After a lovely Bank Holiday weekend, the weather looks a little more changeable for the coming working week with more sunshine and showers on the cards. Good growing weather!

Celebrating flower power in the beautiful Dales
Flower power across the beautiful Derbyshire Dales is being celebrated in a free publication.
‘Floral Dales 2014’ is a leaflet produced by Derbyshire Dales District Council, featuring dates and details of local well dressings, open gardens and flower festivals.
The colourful guide is available from visitor information points across the Dales, including Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock Peak Rail and Matlock Bath. It is also free to view and download online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/floraldales
Wirksworth, Monyash and Middleton-by-Youlgrave well dressings usher in the new season on Saturday 24 May – the first of almost 30 well dressings festivals in Derbyshire Dales villages and towns between now and mid-September.
The guide’s ‘Hidden Gems’ section features a list of open garden weekends at private houses that do not normally open to the public, and there’s also a ‘Meet the Experts’ schedule of top gardeners who open their gardens as part of the National Gardens Scheme.
Floral Dales is designed to help local residents and visitors keep track of a multitude of colourful events, including well dressings, which have their origins in the Derbyshire Dales.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
So, four weeks into a new season and still no new members!! Where are you all? Anyway here goes another waste of space.
Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Chatsworth B – 29 April
Having done really well last week with a bit of a scratch team because of players being away we were back to nearly full strength this week. Rick and Edith were back to their imperious best winning 21 – 10. We managed to win two more of the remaining three games and only just lost the other. The final score was Parwich 82, Chatsworth 57. Not a bad result when you consider the maximum points you can score is 84.
We will certainly lose in the next few weeks, but at the moment WE ARE STILL TOP OF THE LEAGUE. The chances are it will be next Tuesday as we are playing a very very good team with lots of members.
- Next match – Away – Buxton Park – 6 May – 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 1 May
We were doing reasonably well in this league, but we came unstuck with a vengeance this match. Whitworth were top of the league and after their display against us will no doubt keep them there. Those of you who read this twaddle will know we very often struggle in the doubles and this week was no exception. We did get close in one game, but were handsomely beaten in the other two. Whitworth 63, Parwich 34. We did fair a little better in the singles, but again lost 81 – 71. Rick M and Edith (no surprise) winning, with John H only failing by one shot. The overall score 138 – 105 our worst result so far.
Next week we have a ‘blank’ week so will be playing a Club tournament. Why not come and have look.
- Next match – Club match – Square Robin – 8 May 1.00pm Parsons Croft.

Hello Possums,
Escapee sighted in Derbyshire: A six foot tall wild bird, native to Australia, with lethal claws and the capability of reaching a speed 45mph, may be in the vicinity of Parwich. A local man claims to have spotted the bird in his rhea view mirror whilst driving into the village on Friday.
An opportunity has arisen within the Royal Household for someone capable of specialist antique cleaning and a willingness to travel to the numerous royal households around the country. A salary of £14,400 is up for grabs, which includes food and accommodation. Job seeker, Prince Edward, has already submitted his C.V.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has announced further strike dates following a national ballot for strike action last year.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) have said that FBU members will be striking on Friday, May 2, 12 noon until 5pm, Saturday, May 3, 2pm until 2am on Sunday, 4 May, and Sunday, May 4, from 10am until 3pm.
During times of industrial action, DFRS will continue to provide an emergency response service at a reduced level.
The Fire Service are asking members of the public to take extra steps to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in their home and to take extra care when driving on the roads during times of industrial action. They DFRS say:
I would urge everyone to visit our website, www.derbys-fire.gov.uk where there is a wealth of fire safety advice and information available.
If you do have a fire, do not try to tackle this yourself, get out, stay out and call 999, we will respond.
The Ashbourne News Telegraph contains more details.

Hello
Having spent the last two years travelling between Parwich and Wiltshire, Stuart and I will finally be moving to Parwich in August this year.
I have been teaching primary aged children with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia) from home for the last 7 years, having taught in school for 10 years before that, and will continue working from Spenedge from Summer this year. I am qualified, very experienced and passionate about working with children and supporting their parents. The one to one teaching is tailored to the individual child’s needs and adapted to his or her own pace, learning style and strengths. I create an environment where the pupil feels at ease and happy with an emphasis on improving self-confidence as well as basic skills in literacy and maths.
I am very happy to chat about a child’s needs and although sad to have to say goodbye to my current pupils, am looking forward to meeting new pupils and their parents in the near future.
I can be contacted on 07925 274265/ 01793 813666/ ronacampbell@btinterent.com and on 390653 from August.
