Hello Possums.
We know that the approaching festive season is a difficult time for Welsh ex-pats in Parwich, as the dew kissed valleys lament for their lost children, the deeply moving harmonies of The Welsh Male Voice Choir, images of coal miners emerging raven black and weary from the bowels of the earth, the golden daffodils, the spring lambs frolicking in the emerald meadows. But fear not, help is at hand to assuage your nostalgia in the form of Kevin
Beresford’s calendar ‘The Fast Disappearing Red Telephone Boxes Of Wales‘. Kevin also produced this year’s calendar ‘The Roundabouts Of Britain‘, riveting eh!.

Another free parking boost for Dales shoppers and traders this Christmas
For the sixth year in a row, Derbyshire Dales District Council is encouraging people to shop locally this Christmas by introducing free parking across the district from 1st December.
In a scheme designed to boost trade, it’s free to park in any District Council car park after 2pm throughout December.
The free parking initiative was introduced by the District Council in 2008 to help local residents and businesses during the economic recession. Over the Christmas period, Dales residents have free parking for before 11am and after 2pm.
Free parking extends to midnight each day and motorists are reminded not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles as the lead up to Christmas can also be a choice time for thieves.

We have received the following request for help:
One of my bantams has gone missing between 9.00 am and 9.30am this morning. I fear the worst, that it has been a snack to another creature. But in case anyone finds her please let me know, thanks Glynis, tel 561.
Update – Tuesday November 26th: Glynis writes:
Great news, when I went up this morning the missing bantam had returned, no explanation as to where she had been for the last three days, but in good health. Happy days!

Recipe for a great meal out in the Dales this Christmas
Make sure your recipe for eating out in the Derbyshire Dales this Christmas includes an online search of food hygiene ratings.
That’s the advice from Derbyshire Dales District Council, which is recommending people to book into local eateries with a rating of 3 or more.
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme rates food businesses on their hygiene standards, based on inspections carried out by the District Council. Businesses in the area are rated on a scale ranging from 0, which means ‘urgent improvement necessary’, to a top rating of 5, which is ‘very good’.
A District Council spokesperson said: “Don’t only consider the menu if you’re planning a festive meal out with family, friends or work colleagues, or just grabbing a quick lunch when out Christmas shopping – make sure you check the hygiene rating too.
“Look out for the green and black food hygiene rating stickers displayed on windows and doors to find out how businesses in the Dales area are doing. If you can’t see a sticker, then ask staff or check online at www.food.gov.uk/ratings.
“Christmas is a busy time for our local restaurants, cafes and pubs and the good news is that the majority of food businesses in the Derbyshire Dales are rated 3 or above. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme makes it easier for everyone to choose to eat out in places where food hygiene is taken seriously.”
A total of 721 food businesses of the 821 inspected in the Derbyshire Dales have a rating of 3 or more – and an impressive 474 boast a top 5 stars rating.
Catriona Stewart, Head of the Food Hygiene Ratings Team at the Food Standards Agency, said: “This scheme is a great tool when choosing where to eat out, particularly when celebrating a special meal, because it tells you what’s going on in the kitchen and behind the scenes. For local eateries, a good rating will be good for business during the festive season.”

We have received the following correction to last week’s School Newsletter #5:
Oops!
Hi All,
The date for the final performance of ‘Bugsy Malone’ is on Thursday 12th December and not on the 13th as stated in the newsletter.
Also it is the Years 2 & 3 going on the climbing wall trip on 26th November not Years 3 & 4.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello Possums,
As you are probably aware, due to a lightning strike by Weedkiller’s Technical Support Team, we were unable to go to press last week: their main demand being to have Xmas day off with pay. Outrageous!
We must apologize for the delay in responding to the deluge of congratulatory comments on our first anniversary, but our PR man insists on answering each one personally.
We suffered another setback, when Grog Wallace turned down our offer to join our Food Columnists, saying that he would rather eat in one of his own restaurants than work for us.

Our weatherman says:
The mild spell looks to be coming to an end from Tuesday onward, with a significant drop in temperatures on the cards. Winter is definitely on the way – maybe even some of the white stuff…….

We have received this reminder from the Environment Agency, as passed onto us by the Parish Council.
The Environment Agency is concerned to prevent heating oil tank pollution incidents, as they are aware of a number of recent spills, especially from smaller domestic tanks. They are seeking to raise awareness of this issue before the winter sets in, as failures of heating oil tanks and associated pipe work happen most often during the cold snap. “The consequences to groundwater, and rivers for that matter, can be devastating“, they tell us.
For more information on groundwater protection policy, follow this link, and download this PDF.
