Please click here for details of Derbyshire County Council’s proposed Winter Service Scheme for 2013/14.

If you are willing to participate in the Snow Warden Scheme for 2013/14 by becoming a snow warden for Parwich, to assist with clearance of village footpaths, please advise a member of Parwich Parish Council or contact the clerk to the parish council, by no later than 5th September 2013. This will enable paperwork, training and salt deliveries to be put in place in advance of any bad weather.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed to help develop a digital media project at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

Derbyshire County Council are looking for pioneering individuals, groups and organisations to test out a new approach to sharing access to the museum’s exhibits and artefacts.

The project, called ‘Collections in the Landscape’, is being funded with an £81,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will enable visitors to walk in the footsteps of archaeologists and geologists to view artefacts in places where they were either made or found.

As visitors stand next to archaeological sites and famous landmarks they will be prompted to use their smart phones or tablets to download extra information such as images of what people in previous centuries would have seen when they visited.

Pilot projects will focus on three areas − Dovedale, Arbor Low stone circle and the town of Buxton itself. Users will be able to interact with these landscapes in exciting new ways such as exploring Arbor Low to see what ancient stone tools were buried below the earth, strolling through Dovedale using the museum’s fossils to reconstruct a shallow sea floor from 350 million years ago or standing in the centre of Buxton to see what traces generations of visitors have left behind – from the Romans to the Beatles.

Now ‘collections ambassadors’ are needed to help the museum test and develop the technology as well as share news in their local communities.

Councillor Ellie Wilcox, our Deputy Cabinet Member for Health and Communities said:

“We need local volunteers to help make this exciting project happen. This is a truly unique opportunity to be part of something that will transform the way collections at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery are displayed and experienced.”

Volunteers will be involved in the pilot stage 1 of the project. The results will form part of a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in May 2014 for an additional £449,000 to fund the project for another three years.

Ellie Wilcox added:

“Although we’re exploring the potential of digital technology, this project will still be rooted in people power. The knowledge and support of the local community will be a key factor in taking the concept of Collections in the Landscape forward.”

As part of the project the museum is also conducting an online visitor survey.

To take part in the survey or to volunteer as a collections ambassador visit http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/buxtonmuseum (opens in a new window) email citl@derbyshire.gov.uk or call 01629 533540.

Season nearly over

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Well I should have known that after a good week last week we came down to earth with a vengeance! We did get back to the old regime of win one, lose one however, the loss was a really good one.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Hathersage – 27 August.

So having got our best score of the year last week, we managed to collapse in a big way this week. The only consolation I suppose is that our opponents are top of the division and will be promoted so we won’t have to play them next year. That’s positive thinking for you! Edith and Rick did win one game, but our next best team only scored 7! The final result was Hathersage 82 – Parwich 39. It’s probably just as well we only have one match left.

  • LAST match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 3 September 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Park – 29 August.

A couple more matches to go in this league and thankfully we are hanging in there. Our double pairs did us proud only trailing by 47 points to 49 with Ian J and John H winning well 21-7. This gave us a good platform. We did a bit better in the singles winning four out of the six. Our score was 84 out of a possible 90. The final result was Matlock Park 104, Parwich 131. This should keep us about half way in the division.

  • Second to last match- Home – Bradwell – 5 September – 1.45pm.

Please can someone identify my rapidly growing plant? I bought it at the Horticultural Society stall on Open Gardens day as an unnamed small plant in a pot. Since then it has threatened to take over! I think it might be a squash or pumpkin or something from that family.

Coming to an end of a very good summer, the weather continues to be kind, although there is a distinct feel of the impending change of season. Looking forward this week the forecast looks reasonably good with the dry conditions looking like continuing to the end of the working week.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #43

musicHello Possums

It’s Weedkiller’s Raving Reporter here, coming to you live from the Stockport branch of McDonald’s, where customers and staff are being subjected to bouts of antisocial behaviour from groups of youths loitering around the premises. As a counter measure, the management are playing classical music over the system in an effort to force the trouble makers to move on. This, to some extent, has proved successful, with the majority plaguing the nearby Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet instead. Ah, this chappie is obviously not shifting, I’ll try to communicate at his level: “Yo! My man, slap me five. Is yo’ walking de walk and talking de talk, bro’? Is yo’ cool wid da toons, dude? Does Chopin float yo’ boat boat! Is yo’ in de gang man, and hot wid de chicks? boyOver to yo’ bro’.” “Are you crazy, I happen to be the manager here, and if you will get that microphone out of my face, I’d like to get to work ‘Dude’.”

At Cromford Wharf Yesterday. The canal boat was all ready to go, but the nesting coot in the middle of the boat’s turning circle prevented the boat from going more than a few yards down the canal. Attached a few shots to show the flavour of the place. John FS

Bowls Report 23rd Aug ’13

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Only a few matches left in both the leagues we play in. One win and a narrow loss this week.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Wirksworth – 20 August.

Having lost quite well last week we hoped that in our match this week we could redeem ourselves a little, and boy did we do so. Only once before this year had we managed to win all four games and thereby score the maximum points available. We won all four this week and gain our revenge for our defeat on the Wirksworth green. The result was Parwich 84 –Wirksworth 62. This win should keep us in our halfway position in the division. Only two matches left in this league.

  • Next match – Away – Hathersage – 27 August 6.15pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hathersage – 22 August – 1.30pm

In our match against Hathersage in May we suffered our worst defeat for a long, long time. We were determined not to suffer a similar defeat on our green and although we lost it was only just. Our new members Tony and Sue played a great game and won convincingly. Unfortunately our other doubles pairs did not do so well. We were 59 to 41 down. In the singles games we won four out of the six and nearly pulled off a really good comeback, but it was not to be. We lost by two points 123 to 125. Not bad considering we lost by in excess of 70 points at Hathersage earlier in the season.

  • Next match Away – Matlock Park – 29 August – 1.45pm.

No more club matches left this year so if you want to see great bowls you will have to come down to Parsons Croft for the last couple of home matches.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #42

Hello Possums,

Unfortunately, as a direct result of the slide in readership of Weedkiller Weekly’s column, the Board have been forced to make economies in staffing levels.

axThe first head to roll is that of Nellie Sykes, our 93 year old tea lady, who we estimate pushed her trolley a grand total of 97,045 miles over the years and now, 5,972 jammy dodgers, 4,235 KitKats, 5,771 custard creams, 4,897 chocolate digestives and God knows how many cups of tea later, it’s time to say goodbye to a tearful Nellie. However, in recognition of her loyal service, we presented her with a lovely knitted tea cosy from the Age Concern charity shop and five pounds worth of premium bonds.

mouseNext in line was our vermin and pest controller, Fred Shufflecock, who has done a sterling job in this specialist field, once single handedly tackling a baby mouse that was terrorizing the girls in the typing pool. Whether it squeaked, scampered, slithered or crawled, Fred was the man for the job. We presented Fed with a monogrammed puffer pack of DDT and a ten pound golden handshake.   Continue Reading »

Josh S is looking to complete his collection of commemorative Olympic 50 pence coins. These were originally issued in 2010 and 2011, in 29 different designs, each depicting a different Olympic sport.

If you have any of these coins and would like to “double your money”, Josh will pay you £1 for each coin. Or if you have an “uncirculated” coin, i.e. one that is still within its Royal Mail packaging, then he will pay £2 per coin.

You can reach Josh on 727.
