Hello Possums,

bulldogIt wasn’t a very promising outlook for the Parwich Open Gardens but the old bulldog spirit prevailed.

Unpaid bills dating back fifty years have come to light in a store-room at Montague Jeffrey’s bespoke men’s outfitters in Northampton. The culprit at the time was a little known repertory actor named Errol Flynn, who failed to robin hoodpay for socks, ties, underpants and shirts. He went on of course to find fame and fortune in Hollywood as the heart-throb hero in ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’; Flynn, being true to character apparently distributed the clothing in question to the poor and needy.

Tudor Fun Day

Chance to step back to the time of Henry VIII

Families can step back from the 21st century to the time of Henry VIII by joining the Great Tudor Farming Day in the tranquil Dove Valley on Saturday July 6.The outdoor event, from 11am to 4.30pm at the Dove Valley Environmental Centre, Under Whitle Farm near Longnor, will take people back to 1537 to share the daily lives of the Horobin family.

Children can dress in Tudor outfits and try their skills at spinning, weaving, farming, gathering vegetables and herbs, cooking and making reed lights as our 16th century ancestors would have done. Families can watch a re-enactment of skulduggery at Upper Whitle Farm, meet a Tudor quack (doctor), discover how to research local history, write with a quill and learn the secrets of the Tudor landscape and wildlife.

Peak District National Park ranger Lynn Burrow, who helped organise the event, said: “We want to open up a different world and show people what life was like for a Peak District farming family during the time of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

“Children can become part of an oxen plough team, and everyone can try their hand at dry hedging, archaeological exploration and Tudor dancing.”

The event is co-ordinated by Elspeth Walker of the Dove Valley Environmental Centre and run mainly by volunteers. Although free, donations are invited to help cover costs.People should bring a packed lunch (drinks will be available), and clothing suitable for a day outdoors including wellies in case of wet ground.

The postcode for the Dove Valley Centre is SK17 0PR, or ordnance survey map reference SK107 305 (between Longnor and Sheen), tel: 01298 83282.

Despite a rainy start to the day, Open Gardens stayed mostly dry, attracting more visitors than had initially been expected, and raising around £1100 in ticket sales, plant sales and cream teas. Seventeen gardens opened this year – up from eleven last year – and it was particularly good to see a number of new additions to the list of regular favourites.

If any of our readers is able to supply us with photos of the Childrens’ Show of paintings and plants in the Memorial Hall, we would delighted to share them. In the meantime, here is a small selection of photographs taken on the garden trail.

Please click on any photo to view the whole gallery in full-screen size.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

As I write, this the weather could not have been less kind to Open Gardens today – I would be surprised if we see anyone out – but looking at the Met Office radar, it just might be a bit drier this afternoon.

The outlook for the start of the working week is looking good, with warm dry conditions prevailing Monday through Wednesday. Unfortunately, as we run up to Wakes, the forecast is looking more changeable. I always feel that any forecast beyond 4 or 5 days is guesswork, so let’s just hope in ignorance…

Winning Week on the Greens

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Two really good wins this week against opposition that is considerably higher than us in the leagues. Can you believe also that these matches represent the half way point in the season.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 18 June.

We have never played well on the Golf Club green, but this week not only did we play well, we excelled ourselves. We managed to win all four games giving us our highest score of the year! Edith and Rick played their usual powerful game, matched by Dawn and Clara. Our other two pairs were well in command and we finished up deserved winners 84 to 45. The Golf club were two places ahead of us in the league, but hopefully this win will lift us above them.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Park B – 25 June, 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Chatsworth A – 20 June.

Chatsworth are third in the league and always have a good team. We can’t seem to get it together in the doubles games, but although we only won one game we were only nine points behind at 51 to 60.

Thankfully we pulled things around in the singles winning four out of the six games. And more than holding our own in the other two games. The final result gave us a win by 131 to 118

  • Next match – Home – Lafarge, Hope – 27 June – 1.45pm.

No game this weekend because of ‘Open Gardens’. Don’t forget to support the Horticultural Society on Sunday.

Buttonholes

If any Oddfellows would like a red rose buttonhole for the parade on Carnival Day and have not already ordered, please do so by 7pm on Thursday 27 June. Buttonholes are priced at £3.50 and will be available from outside the Sycamore Inn on the morning of the parade.

Thank you, Delia

Hello Possums.

toastFollowing on from Sheffield University’s winning formula for the perfect cream tea, The Royal Society of Chemistry have joined forces with The British Cheese Board to create the perfect cheese on toast. No alternative variations such as Welsh rarebit will be entertained. The next projects are to calculate the ideal circumference of the hole in a doughnut, why are sandwiches served in rounds when they are actually square and the best ways to toast a teacake, ‘Cheers’, ‘Good health’ or ‘Here’s mud in your eye’.

mummyPadihersef, a 2,500-year-old Egyptian mummy, is undergoing a spring clean. He has been on display at Massachusetts General Hospital since being donated in 1823. The mummy is having up to date preservation techniques applied, to avoid any further deterioration. Although Padihersef is of great research value into ancient Egyptian embalming methods, he is not thought to have been a prominent person in society or to have had any direct link to the Pharaohs. Recent x-rays have revealed a perfectly preserved and apparently unused shovel under the bindings that would suggest Padihersef was a council workman or something of that nature.  Continue Reading »

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Apologies for the missing statistics and forecast last week, we were engaged in the Wateraid Mountain challenge 200, where the charity Wateraid aim to get 200 of the UK’s highest peaks climbed on the same day raising both money (from spronsorship) and awareness of the Wateraid charity. Wateraid is an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation – something we in Parwich can thankfully take for granted.  Continue Reading »

A charity event is taking place at Hill Top Farm on Friday 21st June, in aid of the East Midlands Air Ambulance: a service which demonstrated its importance to our community earlier in the year.

The main attraction is a live band, Purple Cloud of Funk, who perform a wide range of well known covers. You can find out more about them on their Facebook page, and you can hear samples of their music on their official website.

“We are lucky to get local band Purple Cloud of Funk”, says Robert Gosling, “as they were on Radio 1 a couple of weeks ago!”

There will be a bar and a burger van, and camping is even available for those who might need it!

Tickets are £6 in advance and £7 on the door. For tickets and information, please contact one of the numbers shown on the flyer below.

Derbyshire residents now have a new weapon against rogue traders and scammers as a new website is officially launched to help protect local consumers.

The Derbyshire Consumer Hub has been designed to highlight scams, tackle rip-offs and provide information about people’s rights when a product is faulty or a service goes wrong.

Derbyshire County Council has partnered with Citizens Advice Bureaux across Derbyshire who have developed the site − www.derbyshireconsumerhub.info (opens in a new window) – funded by Consumer Empowerment Partnership.

The site brings together a network of advice agencies and local campaigners working to ensure people can find information and guidance about consumer affairs.

Good Week on the Green

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

It was with a little trepidation to say the least that we played this week. Both our opponents being top of the respective leagues we play in, but more of that later. Firstly congratulations to Clara E for winning so convincingly the Senior Cup last Sunday not to forget her opponent Audrey B for putting up such a close match in the final. It is good to see new names on the Club’s trophies. Well done each of you.
Now to the ‘boring’ league matches.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Hathersage – 11 June.

Hathersage are romping away with the division we play in and having been extremely well beaten in the Thursday League by them we were apprehensive as to the possible outcome. However, we put together some really good games. We shared them two games each, but Pat B and Harry B played a blinder winning 21 – 9. Dot H and Dennis E lost by the smallest margin possible 20 – 21. Thankfully Edith and Rick pulled out all the stops winning 21 – 7. With the other game also close, the final score was Parwich 77, Hathersage 58. Not bad for a team languishing third from bottom. Let’s hope we can keep it up next week when we play Matlock Golf Club.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Golf Club – 18 June, 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Away – Bradwell A – 13 June.

Top of the league, raining like mad, no worries! Although we did not win the match we more than held our own against Bradwell. Although we only won one doubles game we still managed to win on points 53 to 52. This was largely due to a fabulous win by Dennis E and Ian J coming out on top 21 to 10. For once we did not win the singles games either, only winning two out of the six. However the people who lost battled all the way. The final result was Bradwell 136, Parwich 129. Fantastic!

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 20 June – 1.45pm.

Another Club game this Sunday, ‘Open Doubles’. Will we see more new names on the trophy? Why not come along and have a look. We will be there rain or shine 2.00pm.

Gentlemen Welcome

Straw for your Strawberries

Parwich gardeners alert –
Barley straw for the strawberry patch

After this nice drop of rain the strawberries are in flower and the fruit are developing well. Now is the time to protect the fruit from damage by the soil and slugs by laying barley straw around each plant. I have just acquired a bale of barley straw from a local farmer. I have far more than I need and if any Parwich gardeners want to protect their strawberries with barley straw, they are welcome to help themselves to my surplus straw – just come round to Flaxdale House with a black bin bag and I will gladly supply their needs.

Next BAG 2 SCHOOL collection

20130612-210638.jpgFor information:
This is a great fundraiser for Parwich Primary School.

Bag2School are a non-profit making organisation who collect and remove for recycling unwanted clothing items etc. School is provided with collection bags which are distributed amongst families, who fill the bags (please use bin liners if you have lots of items) with their unwanted items of clothing, shoes, bags, belts, bed linen, towels, curtains, soft toys etc
(no bric-a-brac!).

The bags are brought into school on the morning of collection day, and Bag2School collect, weigh them and pay school, via the PTA, an amount depending on the total weight of items collected.

We would welcome members of the community to bring any unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, soft toys etc in to school by 9am on Monday 17th June ready for collection.

The more bags we collect,
the more money is raised for school funds!

Please ask friends and relatives if they have any suitable items to donate – in bin liners or similar is fine! If you are unable to bring the bags in to school, it may be possible for us to organise collection from you. Please speak to Karen Wigley or Sam Lomas, or contact Karen on 390253.

Many thanks for your help!

Any Spare Plants?

Do you have any spare plants that can be sold at Open Gardens on Sunday 23rd June? If so, please bring them to the Memorial Hall on the morning of Open Gardens, or contact Lesley on 390542. The Horticultural Society use any money raised on the day to subsidise the Main Flower & Vegetable Show and to help support local groups and causes.

Hello Possums,

sun2It looks like summer may have arrived, although no threats of hosepipe bans as yet. A good way to conserve water is to drink beer instead. Apparently you bath2can use bath water for your garden plants, but it’s a real chore carting them all up to the bathroom, such is life.

As alcohol awareness week gets under way, Derby City Council have produced a guide for the city’s winos:

  • Apple-ation controlee White Lighting Cider – A crisp appleno nonsense aperitif distilled from the sun ripened apples of Normandy harvested by a full moon.
  • Chateau Buckfast Abbey – A pretentious full bodied wine with subtle overtones of meths and a nuance of b.o., available from selected corner shops only.
  • Sanatogen Nouveau – A gutsy young wine with bags of potential, ghostly hints of Brasso, which linger on the palette. Perfect for laying down (after five or six bottles or so).
  • binMcEwans – super strength export lager, a must for the more discerning toper, a short cut to oblivion, serve chilled with a bin salvaged kebab or hamburger.

Remember drink sensibly.

Having been well and truly beaten in both Leagues last week we were looking to bounce back as they say this week. Well we bounced a little bit.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 4 June – Wirksworth.

It was surprising how cold the evening was at Wirksworth particularly after the glorious day we had had. Wirksworth are usually a very strong side and this year proved no different than usual. We only managed to win one of the four games. Harry and Clara playing really well one 21 – 8, however wonder of wonders even Edith and Rick lost. They did come close however, losing 21 – 19 on the last end. The final result was a victory for the home team 75 – 67. Next week we are playing Hathersage. Let us hope we do not get beaten as badly as we did against their Thursday team.

  • Next match – Home – Hathersage – 11 June, 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Matlock Park – 6 June.

Well at least we got back to winning ways in this League. We had fallen from the giddy heights of third place down to sixth following last week’s debacle. We again lost the doubles games two one, Clara and John H giving us a great win 21 – 6. Trailing by 48 – 43 after the doubles we again did really well in the singles games, although we only shared them three each. Our scores in the ones we lost, however, were considerably better than Matlock’s. We therefore came out winners by 127 – 111. We had three people come and watch us play today. One of them was Ron Twigg. Whenever the weather is half decent Ron will come and support us. Good on yer Ron.

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell – 13 June – 1.45pm.

Club game this weekend with the open singles won brilliantly last year by Dot H. Can she defend her crown? Come along on Sunday at 2.00pm and see, you may even get a cup of tea.
