Dance Classes start on Wednesday

Katy at Village Games says “the teacher says it is very much free style and will be adapted to the participants which turn up however saying that is aimed more at the parents and children (mummies and daughters dancing together etc) rather than an experienced dancer, however that’s not to say we could not introduce a further session, should there be the interest in the village.”

PTA Fashion Show tomorrow

Parwich School PTA have organised a Fashion Show at 7.30pm Tuesday 16th September in the Memorial Hall. Contact Karen W tel 253 for tickets.

Karen adds:

Refreshments will also be available. Due to the lack of phone signal in the area the card machine is not likely to work so cash or cheque will be best to snap up the great offers.

Orchard Farm

We wanted to let you all know that we have just made the sad (for us) decision to put Orchard Farm on the market. We have been very happy living here and have taken great pride and joy in running our two holiday cottages, Tom’s and Douglas’s Barns to the best of our ability, but the time has come for us to think, reluctantly, about downsizing.

Ideally we hope to stay in Parwich if we can find somewhere suitable when the time comes, but it will be a big wrench leaving Orchard Farm.

If any of you know anyone who might possibly be interested, do let them know. John German will be handling the sale and no doubt all the details will be on their website in a week or two. It will be marketed as a house ‘with letting potential’ and we hope to sell to someone who is eager to carry on running Tom’s and Douglas’s Barns so that it will be ‘business as usual’ as far as all our guests new and old are concerned. We have bookings into next summer.

Meanwhile it is all go up here at the moment. The photographer comes on Friday to take photos of the interior and as you can imagine an awful lot of sorting and clearing has to be done before then… Wish us luck!

John and Marion Fuller-Sessions

The Blog Team is sure we speak for all in wishing you a smooth transition, hopefully to another home in Parwich, not least because of John’s fantastic photographic contributions to parwich.org.

Paul B’ Weedkiller Weekly #88

Hello Possums,

Well, the hot potato at the moment is of course the Scottish independence referendum. The rebels could well be putting the Buckfast Abbey tonic wine on ice soon, as old Alec Salmond nudges ahead. The no no’s have revealed their ace in the hole, as the formidable Gordon Broon is dusted off and wheeled out to join the fray. The implications of Scottish independence are far reaching and a Scottish republic could be next on the agenda, which could see the Queen relinquishing her time share at Holyrood House. Bonny Prince Charles is seeing his long awaited realm diminishing before his very eyes; his vision of being monarch of the glen fading fast. Even as we speak Gregg’s bakery are removing Scotch eggs from the shelves, Edinburgh Woolen Mill outlets have been looted and McDonalds ‘restaurants’ are being picketed. Weedkiller’s Raving Reporter, Jimmy Riddle, is still transmitting with his cat’s whiskers set from The Swinging Sporran in Glasgow, but fears he may have been rumbled.

Rumours are now echoing around the hills and valleys of a plot for Welsh independence being in the embryonic stage. Weedkiller’s intelligence agents have intercepted transmissions in Moss code from a location somewhere in Parwich to a spymaster in Colwyn Bay. This ‘femme fatale’ could rise up at any moment to lead the revolt. Her husband is suspected of photographing sensitive installations in and around the village and intelligence gathering. Stay vigilant comrades.

Yippee, it’s Royal Baby mania all over again. Pippa is furiously knitting baby gros. A spokesperson for North Norfolk Borough Council stated that there would be no favouritism and the Royal couple would have to take their chances on the waiting list for a council house along with everyone else. Kate’s mother has been accused of assuming royal airs; “Simply not true”, she said, before storming off with her corgis.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

With high pressure continuing to dominate, the weather looks set fair for the foreseeable future. Certainly the working week ahead looks dry and warm in the daytime, but the nights will be cool. Looking forward to next weekend, although obviously harder to predict, it seems likely we might be in for a repeat performance of this one. My apologies for the continued absence of rain data – it is on my “little” list of jobs to do ……

Lock up you garages and sheds

Recently there was an incident where a stranger was seen behaving suspiciously in a Parwich drive and who gave a good impression of making up excuses when challenged. At risk of type casting, it involved a scruffily dressed middle aged man in rusty white van, showing an inappropriate interest in a garage housing building tools.

Also the Police have been making enquiries locally about a person/people aparantly selling mattresses from a white van.

So make sure you lock your garages and sheds and report any suspicious happenings to Derbyshire Crimestoppers tel. 0800 555 111 (or as always you can use the emergency number 999).

Final Cliffhanger

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now is the time to say goodbye. Now is the time to yield a sigh. Now is the time to wend our way. (Until next year anyway.) It would have been nice to end on a winning note, but you can’t win all the time.

Matlock Tuesday bowls League.

An update on this league is that we managed to move up a place from fifth to fourth, our best result for quite a few years. We also won the same number of games as the team who came top. Not bad for our little Club.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Bakewell – 11 September.

Bakewell are second in the league and last week they beat the team at the top. Things did not auger well, and so it proved. As you know we sometimes don’t do very well in the doubles games and unfortunately this week was not good. We were behind 63 – 27. Our singles players did manage to retrieve the situation a little, but it was not enough to get us near to winning the match.

The final score was Bakewell 125, Parwich 103. As you readers of this fabulous weekly sports report will know we were in third place and the top three are promoted to the giddy heights of the top division. After this week’s result we will be lucky to stay there.

So that’s it for another year. Still desperate for new players and if we get promoted we will need them even more. We may get another invitation to play indoor bowls at Ashbourne Bowls Club on Monday afternoons. If we do I will let you know and you will be welcome to join us.

John B

We in the Blog Team thought it might be interesting to know our readers thoughts on the possibility of Scottish independence and whether you think it could impact on our small part of the Derbyshire Peak District.

Is Scotland significant in your personal or work life (eg Are you from Scotland? Have you lived there or plan to live there in the future? Do you have property or investments in Scotland? Do you have family there? Is your work linked to Scotland? … … …)

If Scotland votes ‘Yes’ to leaving the United Kingdom, do you think it will make any difference to our life here in the Peak District?

How would you cast your vote if you could take part in the Scottish referendum?

Work on the Ponds

Today the Jubilee Pond and Sheep Wash [also called the Dam] were dredged to remove the excess silt and weed. The photos show before and after. The contractors have not quite completed the work. A small amount of tidying up will be carried out by them next week, which includes a little reseeding.

The Parish Council would like to replant a small area of the Sheep Wash and Peak Park have suggested planting some yellow flag iris. If anyone has any in their ponds, surplus to their needs, the Council would gladly arrange for them to be planted in the pond.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #87

Hello Playmates,

Firstly, many congratulations to our very own Christine G, whose Weedkiller Extra #18 comment was picked by our panel of judges from the hundreds of entries as being the most original and wittiest. Of course, Christine is no stranger to the world of merry mirth, cutting her comedy milk teeth at the annual Ffestiniog Festival Fun Week talent competition with her hilarious rendition of Dylan Thomas’ ‘Under Milk Wood‘. Her next big break came at ‘The Rubstick and Gastric Glassblowers and Pipe Blenders‘ Social Club in the Yorkshire Dales. Christine’s professionalism shone through as the preceding turn, a Charlie Williams tribute artiste, went down under a salvo of pork pies. Her act did however encroach on ten minutes of bingo time, but her winning smile and affinity with the audience saw her through, what could have been a potentially nasty incident, to win first place. Well done lass.

Cosmetic surgeons all over the U.S.A are mourning the passing of the comedienne and chat show host Joan Rivers, one of the greatest acerbic and self deprecating entertainers ever to tread the boards, who has died in New York at the age of ‘fifty seven‘.

Tony Blair, after recently being announced as philanthropist of the decade, has pledged to give away his millions as a gesture of contrition. Cherie is said to be ecstatic, and can’t wait to get her hands on his money.

Looks like a bit of an “Indian” summer in prospect, with the coming period mostly dry and settled with pleasant temperatures and cooler nights. Not much in the way of rain is anticipated this week.

Well there is not doubt of the common name of this shrub, a Butterfly bush.
