At Cromford Wharf Yesterday. The canal boat was all ready to go, but the nesting coot in the middle of the boat’s turning circle prevented the boat from going more than a few yards down the canal. Attached a few shots to show the flavour of the place. John FS
Today and Bank Holiday Monday are good days to visit as the nearby Leawood Pumping Engine will be under full steam.

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
Only a few matches left in both the leagues we play in. One win and a narrow loss this week.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Wirksworth – 20 August.
Having lost quite well last week we hoped that in our match this week we could redeem ourselves a little, and boy did we do so. Only once before this year had we managed to win all four games and thereby score the maximum points available. We won all four this week and gain our revenge for our defeat on the Wirksworth green. The result was Parwich 84 –Wirksworth 62. This win should keep us in our halfway position in the division. Only two matches left in this league.
- Next match – Away – Hathersage – 27 August 6.15pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hathersage – 22 August – 1.30pm
In our match against Hathersage in May we suffered our worst defeat for a long, long time. We were determined not to suffer a similar defeat on our green and although we lost it was only just. Our new members Tony and Sue played a great game and won convincingly. Unfortunately our other doubles pairs did not do so well. We were 59 to 41 down. In the singles games we won four out of the six and nearly pulled off a really good comeback, but it was not to be. We lost by two points 123 to 125. Not bad considering we lost by in excess of 70 points at Hathersage earlier in the season.
- Next match Away – Matlock Park – 29 August – 1.45pm.
No more club matches left this year so if you want to see great bowls you will have to come down to Parsons Croft for the last couple of home matches.

Thank you David G for these photos, sent in with the caption “It’s party time, the FUN GUYS are out“.
(Editor’s Note: David can certainly give Colin S, the Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire punner of the year 1986-2003, a run for his money. The Blog Team would strongly discourage the non-culinary use of either punning or fungi to enhance your party.)

Hello Possums,
Unfortunately, as a direct result of the slide in readership of Weedkiller Weekly’s column, the Board have been forced to make economies in staffing levels.
The first head to roll is that of Nellie Sykes, our 93 year old tea lady, who we estimate pushed her trolley a grand total of 97,045 miles over the years and now, 5,972 jammy dodgers, 4,235 KitKats, 5,771 custard creams, 4,897 chocolate digestives and God knows how many cups of tea later, it’s time to say goodbye to a tearful Nellie. However, in recognition of her loyal service, we presented her with a lovely knitted tea cosy from the Age Concern charity shop and five pounds worth of premium bonds.
Next in line was our vermin and pest controller, Fred Shufflecock, who has done a sterling job in this specialist field, once single handedly tackling a baby mouse that was terrorizing the girls in the typing pool. Whether it squeaked, scampered, slithered or crawled, Fred was the man for the job. We presented Fed with a monogrammed puffer pack of DDT and a ten pound golden handshake. Continue Reading »

Josh S is looking to complete his collection of commemorative Olympic 50 pence coins. These were originally issued in 2010 and 2011, in 29 different designs, each depicting a different Olympic sport.
If you have any of these coins and would like to “double your money”, Josh will pay you £1 for each coin. Or if you have an “uncirculated” coin, i.e. one that is still within its Royal Mail packaging, then he will pay £2 per coin.
You can reach Josh on 727.

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
Only one league match this week, it didn’t help that it was at Buxton Park. The only good thing about their green is the view from it. However, what a result in the Greenaway competition!!
Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Buxton Park – 13 August.
The green was like a sheet of glass, you only had to trickle your wood out of your hand and it finished up in Chapel–en–le–Frith. Coupled with this was the fact that they had been relegated from the top division last year. (Getting the excuses in early) Our opposition were complaining that it was slow! The upshot of this of course was that we did not do very well.
Harry B and Clara E did win one game for us resoundingly, but the remainder were lost. Yes even Rick and Edith. The final score was Buxton 68 Parwich 50.
- Next match – Home – Wirksworth – 20 August 6.15pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Greenaway Competition
This week is the annual Charity event for the Greenaway Centre in Darley Dale. It is played at two venues, Wirksworth and Whitworth Park. We had a change of venue this year we were at Whitworth Park. The competition is for doubles and names are drawn out of a hat for partners. Bearing in mind there were in excess of 50 people playing at Whitworth alone, with all abilities, it is testament to Parwich that we seem to be able to do well. This year was no exception. Ian J got to the semi final of the repechage and Rick M only went on to win! Congratulations Rick. Still it is not the winning, but the taking part that counts, as they say and more than £1000 was raised.
- Next match Home – Hathersage – 22 August – 1.45pm.
Last Sunday we played the men’s and ladies singles. Val K won a close match to take the ladies title and Rick M won the men’s. The fourth time in five years. In the men’s final though was Tony A who put up a good game considering he only started playing Crown Green Bowls for the first time this year. There’s no replacement for natural talent!
This Sunday we play the Round Robin competition. It starts at 10.30am and lasts nearly all day. Come down to Parsons Croft and top up your sun tan and see top class bowling!

Firstly, we have ‘Lathkill Dale on a hot, sunny August afternoon’, and tomorrow he travels even further afield.

After the Panoramic Five, August is normally a quiet news month for us, so we are taking the opportunity to address some important questions that may have got missed, so let us know of any further vital issues that you want raising.
The last 18 months has seen record levels of page hits here at parwich.org, but we can not be complacent.
The above map shows where in the World people are looking at the Blog. It is heartening that we are no longer proscribed in China and we might be big in Vanuatu and the Northern Mariana Islands, however it is extremely worrying that no one in Greenland, Svalbard, Cuba, Haiti, Turkmenistan, Somalia, Madagascar, Mozambique and much of west and central Africa has visited parwich.org. Hi
Reading on the blog that super-fast broadband will be here in the next ten years, would anyone know of a reliable broadband supplier at the moment with decent speeds? I am looking for a bundle with anytime calls. Look forward to any comments.
Thanks, Terry P.
Note: There was some previous discussion of broadband speed in February this year and, more relevant, of recommended providers in 2010, but things are likely to have changed since then.
