We had some oil delivered from Halso on 28th Jan at an agreed price of 62.4p per litre. Imagine our surprise when the invoice that followed stated that this price was only for payment in advance of delivery, and that payments afterwards would be at a rate of 70.4p. Needless to say, we’ve paid the agreed lower rate only. Watch this space.
I had a bad experience when I left my car at the Point Parking Site – RingGo 2860 last Wednesday when I was charged at the rate of £1.54p per hour for 15 hours car parking while I was in London for the day – total cost £23.10p Normally I expect to pay about £4.50p for 1 day parking. Next day I complained to the owners who have now refunded me all but 60p. If you are in London for the day, do not pay at the hourly rate, book 1 day instead. Their website advertises short stay car parking at £1.50p per hour and all day parking at £4.50p. I noticed the car park was almost empty – it is normally full – not surprising!
The Peak Park Authority, in consultation with the other National Parks, has issued a pamphlet on the design and siting of solar panels for the National Park (click on the image to the right to see the leaflet on line).
Do note that for most domestic buildings solar panels are permitted development and do not need planning consent. However for listed buildings planning will be required, so this leaflet should be very helpful.

Please be extra vigilant. Contact Derbyshire Police on 101 if you have any information.
Derbyshire County Council (DCC) is proposing to introduce ‘part night street lighting’ in Parwich. This process has already taken place in other parishes throughout Derbyshire. DCC has identified street lights which are proposed to be turned off for part of each night in Parwich.
There will be a consultation period which commences on 5th March and lasts until 2nd April. Parwich residents are invited to submit comments directly to DCC regarding this initiative during this period.
A copy of the plan illustrating the lights which are proposed to be turned off will be available for inspection at Parwich village shop.
Members of the parish council will discuss this proposal at the next parish council meeting on 20th March 2013.
Firstly I must deal with an unpleasant occurrence, a complaint from Mr Bill W. Bill told me that his beauty sleep is being disturbed because his wife Anne is reading the ‘Weedkiller’ on her kindle in bed, and chuckling well into the wee hours. He also told me that in the past by the time Ann had finished her whelks and jellied eels and drank her cocoa he would normally have been fast asleep. Our apologies Bill.
Tuesday turned out to be the best day of the week with a real promise of spring in the air. We then reverted to winter, albeit dry and cold rather than the more normal damp conditions.
The dry cold spell looks like continuing for the week to come so the forecast is cold grey and dry for the next few days at least.

From the all-seeing lens of JF-S, here is “a series of five evening shots, showing a Great Tit flying in for feed in the glorious sunshine we have enjoyed today.”
The sunny weather saw many folk from the village out and about basking in the February sunshine. Last Sunday our roving reporter donned his walking boots and headed over the undulating countryside towards Tissington. The following photos provide proof that the sun was not an illusion!
According to NASA, the International Space Station (ISS) should be visible over our region this evening (Sunday), clear skies permitting.
The ISS will appear at 7.02pm. It will be visible for two minutes, at a maximum height of 72 degrees above the horizon. It will appear from WSW, and it will disappear at ESE.
If anybody is reading this we will have been spared what in astronomical terms is a near miss, or in lay man’s terms coming within a gnats eye brow of a disaster, as an asteroid, 150ft wide and travelling at a speed of five miles a second, passed by at a mere 17,000 miles and went on its merry way into infinity. This rascal is the closest ever recorded, and would be capable of generating the explosive force of 1,000 atom bombs. To put it in a nutshell an area the size of London would be turned into an abyss; ignorance is bliss eh!
An Australian business man has revealed his plans to turn a redundant mortuary into a luxury hotel. Continue Reading »
Apologies for the 2 week absence of weather reports. It looks like our trip to remind the swifts to start their northward journey was well timed, as the UK shivered through a pretty cold start to February.
Thankfully the weather from Thursday on has picked up markedly, and that looks like continuing until mid-week when it seems that winter will return with colder temperatures and some possibility of snow. The days are getting noticeably longer with that promise of spring around the corner, but it really is a long way for those poor birds to fly!
I’m two miles from the Parwich Exchange. Has anyone else in our area experienced a serious drop in BT Broadband speed during recent weeks?
My BB speed has dropped from around 4.5 Mbps average (over a five month period – 6.5 Mbps peak) to around 1.75 Mbps. Since that time I’ve spent far too long messing around with repeated calls to the BT “Help” Desk, until this morning when they said an engineer would be calling in a week’s time to “do some checks”. Per the Help Desk, I’m currently connected to the “Test Socket”.
I’d be interested in others’ current (and past) experiences with BT and alternative Providers out here in the boonies. I’ve noticed some in our community use microwave, which sounds costly!

Unfortunately we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel this month’s Film show, as the heating in the Hall is unreliable, and we could not guarantee that the hall would be warm.

The Ashbourne sub-branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have announced their local pubs of the Year with our Sycamore Inn coming first in the rural pub of the year category, and with Smith’s Tavern winning the Ashbourne town pub of the year.
Janet Gosling at The Sycamore runs a superb village pub right at the heart of the community, with the village shop inside, as well as finding the time to serve an excellently well-kept range of Robinson’s ales.
Following months of painstaking examinations, the remains exhumed from beneath a Leicester council car park have finally been confirmed as those of King Richard III. The next challenge is to locate the remains of King Alfred, the great a notable reformer and peacemaker but certainly no contender for the ‘Great British Bake Off’.
Just as you thought it was safe to go back into the supermarket, a Tesco’s customer has discovered a tooth embedded in one of his sausages. The offending item was submitted for analysis: a Tesco’s spokesman has it straight from the horse’s mouth that the tooth in question was in fact of human origin. What a relief! In the ongoing saga: ‘Wither-spoons’ have stopped serving burgers and ‘Lanca-Shire’ hotpot; Ladbrokes have cancelled the ‘1,000 guineas maiden-steaks’; ‘Pizza Express’ will now be known as ‘Pony Express’. In fact a recent ‘Gallop Poll’ has suggested that consumers are boycotting processed foods all together.
