Parwich artist Esther Tyson is working on a project to immortalise the seahorses of Dorset in art – but first of all, she has to learn to swim underwater. Esther’s project diary continues below…
I have not been under water for six weeks, due to an inner ear infection. But now, rested, all is set!
The plan is to wade through the PADI Open Water Manual (along with DVDs), which will guide me through the theory of scuba diving and the safety aspects. Throughout this book there are mini-quizzes and knowledge reviews, all of which are to be completed by the start of the course.
Lou, who will be my instructor, has filled me in with the basic plan. The initial dives will be in the local pool, to learn a variety of scuba diving skills. These are called ‘Confined Dives’. They will last from four to six hours daily, over four days. The following two days will be open water sea dives. All the skills learned and practised in the pool will be assessed in the open water environment during these dives.
The first two open water dives will be at Swanage Pier (with a very early start!) These will take us to a depth of three to four metres. The last two open water dives will be in Vobster Quay in Somerset. This is an inland quarry with a depth of 37 metres (121 feet).
If all goes well, the following week will be down to Studland… and drawing seahorses!

We would like to thank Nia L for informing us that the new Parish Elections will be held on Thursday 23rd June. Notice of election was sent out by Derbyshire Dales and this notice should have been posted on the board on Wednesday 18th May.
As of 11am this morning, no notice has appeared. We have been told that the notice is currently being driven to the village and will be posted this afternoon.
The nomination forms must arrive at Matlock by midday on Thursday – by appointment only
or Ashbourne, tomorrow between 10am-1pm
Concern has been expressed to Derbyshire Dales at the short notice that potential new councillors have to access and return completed forms, due to the late appearance of the notice. Julie Booth, who is responsible for elections at Derbyshire Dales, assured us this morning that if anyone wishes to stand, they will do everything possible to help. Please make your initial request via their help line (01629 761267) and only ring Julie B (01629 761267) if further assistance is required.
We would like to hear from anyone who encounters any difficulties in receiving or submitting their papers. Currently Jane H (413) has one spare nomination paper.

Amanda Beddows has sent us the following message:
I am one of two Parent Governors currently sitting on the Governing Body of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, and would like to take this opportunity to let local parents know that, should they have any concerns or comments either as parents of children already attending the school, or about to commence their education there, that my responsibilities include raising pertinent issues to the school, voiced by parents, at regular meetings of the Governing body. In particular, I would welcome any questions parents may have regarding the current proposals to change the status of the school to an Academy Trust. Following consultation meetings with various authorities and parents, the Department of Education granted the school permission to proceed (last week) with the anticipated change taking place in August to maximise the financial benefits this is likely to incur.
In order for the process to commence, a vote in favour is required from the Governing Body, due to sit for this purpose on Tuesday May 24th. As a parent representative I would like to ensure that my vote represents the wishes of parents in the area as far as possible therefore I would welcome any comments any parents would like to make at this stage and also address any questions relating to the change in status which remain outstanding. Whilst I may be unable to answer some queries myself I am able to ask appropriate members of the Governing Body and Senior Management team on parents’ behalf. Any queries can be sent to me via email at home (amanda beddows at yahoo dot co dot uk) or work (php07ab at sheffield dot ac dot uk) or by telephone (626) and treated in strict confidence.
Any other queries relating to more general issues are also welcome, discussion of these is likely to be postponed until after the emergency meeting next week and take place at the following full Governors meeting on June 20th. My particular interest as a member of the Staffing and Curriculum sub-committee is Science and Maths so any concerns or comments relating to the delivery of these subjects are very welcome.
Many thanks
Amanda Beddows, Hallgates

Mixed fortunes again this week. We had a reversal in fortunes in the two leagues we play in.
Tuesday league -17 May – Home – Bradwell.
Bradwell were only just behind us in the league, however, following this week they have overtaken us! We only managed to win one of the games although another was a very small loss. The score however reflected that Bradwell played a lot better than we did and we lost 61 to 73. We are now down to fourth in the League.
Next match 24 May – Away – Wirksworth.
Thursday Friendly league – 19 May – Home – Tideswell.
Not quite sure what we did right in this match, but it would be really good if we could repeat it or even bottle it for future matches. We managed to win all three doubles games quite comfortably and shared the six singles games three each. Even in the games we lost we only lost by the odd point. The result was that we had probably one of our best results in this league winning by 146 to 107. We were well down in the League, let us hope we have climbed a few places.
Next match 26 May – Away – Matlock Park.
On Sunday we have one of our friendly afternoon matches against Ashbourne Park on their green. It’s a good afternoon, but their green is very tricky.
Don’t forget Monday nights 6.30.

Tomorrow is the bulk rubbish collection; the dustcart picks up at various points in the village. Remember if you leave rubbish to be removed, you must be in attendance when the wagon comes and load your rubbish, yourself. Don’t lose it, use it – even if you only have a small amount to get rid of.

Village Green 0925 – 0945
By old shop, village top 0950 – 1010
Croft Avenue 1015 – 1045

Do something amazing this year and join us on the Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk, open to walkers of all ages both men and women. Enter as a family or get together some friends from your work, college, school or community. Even get the neighbours involved, every person counts!
The starting point will be the ABCW Marquee, located in the field to the left prior to Carsington Visitor Centre leaving at 2.30pm. Therefore early arrival is recommended for all walkers. Registration is required from all walkers including children.
Click on this picture to go to the ABCW website and find out more or get registered:

As an added bonus, The A52s will be providing entertainment before and after the walk along with two other bands. Last year, it was a hoot with some very sprightly grannies throwing their shapes…..

Four former railway tunnels are ready to re-open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders, following a major renovation project. Transport minister Norman Baker will officially open them on Wednesday May 25th. Update: Norman Baker will not be attending the opening after all.
The tunnels – Headstone, Cressbrook, Litton and Chee Tor – each measure between 400 and nearly 500 metres. They run from south of Bakewell to approximately three miles south of Buxton. Having been shut to the public when the Midland Railway closed in 1968, they have now been cleared out, repaired and resurfaced, with new lighting installed.
Nearly 1.5 miles of extra public access has been created. This extends the existing Monsal Trail, which runs from Bakewell to the edge of Buxton.
The project has been undertaken with the needs of cyclists in mind. Two new cycle hire businesses, at Blackwell Mill and Hassop Station, have been set up along the Monsal Trail to cater for those who wish to explore the new routes. Information panels and audio listening posts have also been provided.
Click here for more information, including maps and leaflets.

Sue H writes:
Recently, I have had not one but three incidents where sparrowhawks have pinned birds to the ground virtually in front of me! I find it absolutely amazing to see this life and death struggle played out before me. The first time was late winter when I saw a sparrowhawk pinning a flapping blackbird to the verge just outside our house. As I was in the car, I could only stop and watch until forced to move on by another car coming. I was there for at least a minute with the sparrowhawk frozen mid-hunt. I quickly parked the car and ran back but both birds had gone…Did the sparrowhawk get its meal? Did the blackbird escape?
Then, over the Easter break, I was quietly painting windows on our terrace when there was a whoosh, a thud, a lot of feathers and many birds flying around protesting. Just yards from where I stood, possibly the same sparrowhawk had its claws into a pigeon no less! Again, there was a kind of freeze-frame when nobody moved. Tentatively, I took a step and off flew the sparrowhawk releasing the pigeon, perhaps unable to take off with its weight. Again, I wonder if the pigeon made it because along with the feathers there were spots of blood.
This week I was quietly weeding in the garden. This time, not my own but the home of our renowned bird photographer John F-S. If only he had been outside with his camera! Once again, just yards from me, a sparrowhawk emerged from a shrub, again pursued by protesting birds, carrying a female blackbird. The bird was dropped pretty promptly and I was just left in wonder at being a witness to all this hunting. I have never seen such activity before – has anyone else had such instances of sparrowhawks in their gardens?
The last amusing thing to happen was when another blackbird was dropped unceremoniously from the sky right between myself and Marion F-S! Stunned, it lay still and then shuffled off. I guess the sparrowhawk missed its meal yet again!
From now on, I think John F-S needs to shadow me with his camera whenever I’m in the garden! It would be fantastic to get some shots of this amazing bird in action.
