It seems like there have been hundreds of men on site this week, from all trades. An extra job that Wildgoose is doing, is to put in three sections of concrete piping just in front of the site; to carry the water down the culvert. The oak timbers at the rear are finished, all the external oak doors are in and glazed. Internal and external wall lights are now in place. The cabins went on Tuesday and this has meant that the front of the site is now being leveled, ready for the car park and at the rear work is ongoing creating the steps, ramp and patio.

A rogues gallery of some of the people on site!

Another local resident has asked us to again to remind parents to talk to their children about road safety on their bikes, especially with the weather improving and half term almost upon us. One of the numerous danger spots seems to be children racing out of Parsons Croft and straight across the road behind Orchard View, without looking. We are so lucky that the children have such fun out and about, but their safety is paramount.

The new Memorial Hall is now visibly nearing completion and already we can see how well the building fits in with village surroundings with its local Derbyshire limestone and European oak which will fade to a beautiful silvery grey.
Although all the money for the build has been raised, the last few weeks have seen a flurry of donations from both village user groups and individual villager residents, anxious to make their contribution. These are being used to provide trees for landscaping and also to renew things that will look rather tired in the new hall. The committee are hoping to have all new tables and chairs for the Oddfellows Lunch and so far have raised enough money for all the tables and sixty chairs. Another forty chairs are still needed so if anyone would like to make a contribution towards these it will be much appreciated.
Donations for the supply and tree planting have been received from:
Top Nosh
Pre-school Stepping Stones,
Tennis Club
Mother and Toddlers Group
A village resident.
Other generous donations have been received from:
The Horticultural Society,
Parwich Methodists
The Film Club
Parwich School,
BCB Coated Stone Ltd
Individual village residents.

Following a spate of lead theft from churches in the Derbyshire Dales, which we reported in a post last Wednesday, police officers have arrested a 22-year-old man from Alfreton and charged him with allegedly stealing lead from a church. At about 1.15am on Monday 17th May, patrolling officers saw a suspicious Vauxhall Corsa driving through Tansley. They followed and found it abandoned nearby. A quantity of lead was found inside the car. It was later discovered that lead had been stolen from the roof of St Helen’s Church, Church Town, Darley Dale. The man is due to appear before magistrates in Chesterfield next month.
We would still ask residents are asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near to churches, schools, etc., to the police on 0345 123 33 33.
Thank you from the Police Community Messaging Service.

Out now are these beautiful orchids, probably the Early Purple Orchid.
They can be found all over the White Peak area.
There is a lovely field full of cowslips and these orchids on the right hand side on the B5056 before you get to Hoe Grange and Longcliffe.
Thanks to JFS for this Parwich Orchid

Over the last week things have been happening so quickly it is difficult to know which photos to show. Inside the oak floor has been laid and will be sanded and oiled, currently it is under hardboard to protect it, as work continues in the main hall. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

The oak and painted doors are all hung. The photo below shows the double sliding doors, located under the messine storage, that open into the foyer. The workman on his hands and knees is laying the natural limestone floor that runs from the entrance to the kitchen. Oak skirtings will be fitted through the hall.

The kitchen has now been fully fitted, and what a kitchen! Continue Reading »

PARWICH PARISH COUNCIL
Minutes of the Annual Open Meeting held on Thursday 2 April 2009 at 7.00pm in the Memorial Hall
To consider and if accurate, approve the minutes of the Annual Open Meeting held on 3 April 2008.
RESOLVED that the minutes of the meeting held on 3 April 2008 be confirmed as a true record.
To consider matters arising from the Annual Open Meeting held on 3 April 2008.
* The Parish Council are in the process of developing dedicated pages on parwich.org. Agendas have been posted.
* Concerns raised regarding the B5056 are still relevant. The update provided by the Highways Department regarding the road conditions stated that the 1st set of temporary traffic lights are due to works being carried out by Severn Trent Water, these are due for completion by the end of April.
* The 2nd set of temporary traffic lights is due to subsidence. Designs for a crash barrier and solution are due for completion in June with works planned for late summer.
* The 3rd set of temporary traffic lights is due to the potential collapse of the road. The Structures department is investigating solutions.
*Concern was raised that the traffic lights are frequently faulty. Pc Cooper advised that faults should be reported to the Call Derbyshire Service or the police. Continue Reading »

Week commencing 10 May 2010.
After the euphoria of last weeks ‘double victories’, mixed fortunes this week. We had a win and loss.
Tuesday League – Away – to Baslow. Baslow are a good team and are considerably higher in the League than we are. We did however win one game, but lost the other three. The overall match result was 69 to 56 to Baslow.
We were fourth from bottom of the league and still remain in that position.
Next match – Away- Bradwell B – 18 May. 6.30
Thursday League – Home- Baslow B
A similar story to last week. We did not do very well in the Doubles games, losing two games to one. However we again had a great turnaround in the Singles games winning four games to two. The result was therefore a really good win by 120 to 112. With any luck we will stay fourth from top of the League.
Next match – Away – Chatsworth B – 20 May. 1.30 ish.
It was really good to see someone on holiday in the Village use the green. Although a ‘flat green’ bowler he soon started to get to grips with some of our game. He was most complimentary about the facilities.
We will be down on the green around 6.30 ish on Monday night – we welcome newcomers.
John B.

We have received the following message from Sue H:
We know of a very nice Swiss girl who is hoping to spend 6 months in England from this July to improve her English. She is 20 and works as a secretary in the French speaking part (she also speaks German). Her English is not fluent enough for her to work as a secretary over here but she would prefer to find paid employment rather than have to pay for an expensive language school. We’re investigating possibilities such as language assistant in QEGS or waitressing. Does anyone have any ideas/openings, or does anyone need an au pair over the Summer? Please ring Sue H on 390334.

As usual, the ANT is available on line or from the Sycamore. Normally we report on the ANT on the day it comes out but there’s always one of the blog team who forgets and reports a day late. I can’t remember which one though.
The headline news this week is that Patrick McLoughlin not only retained his seat but received exactly the same number of votes this time as he did last time. Mr Mcloughlin said that he had no idea of what the odds were of something like that happening but that he might buy a lottery ticket next week and “see what happens”. There is also some election coverage inside the paper although “no mention of people being turned away from polling stations.” There were certainly no local reports of crowds of voters running amok at The Sycamore or Bradbourne Village Hall this week where the ladies manning the polling station told me it had been a “quiet day, quite boring really”. Members of Neighbourhood Watch, Church Watch and local residents are asked to be extra vigilant and note down the registration numbers and details of any suspicious vans/vehicles with ladders on top parked near churches.
Over the past two weeks, lead has been stolen from the roofs of three village churches in Youlgrave, Middleton (Matlock), Osmaston (Ashbourne) & Mappleton. Leek police in Staffordshire have also received several incidents of lead theft from churches in their villages.
Please pass on any information to our call centre and help to stop these thieves causing great expense to our local churches – call 0345 123 33 33.

This long-tailed tit nest belongs to Christine & David and was photographed by JF-S. The little white blobs are polystyrene.

Information from the RSPB website says that ‘The long-tailed tit is easily recognisable with its distinctive colouring, a tail that is bigger than its body, and undulating flight. Gregarious and noisy residents, long-tailed tits are most usually noticed in small, excitable flocks of about 20 birds. Like most tits, they rove the woods and hedgerows, but are also seen on heaths and commons with suitable bushes…it is similar to a pied wagtail’.

A new website has been launched to help keep Derbyshire residents prepared and informed before, during and after major incidents such as severe weather and flooding. The site is called ‘Derbyshire Prepared’ and will include up-to-the minute information about ongoing incidents, useful contacts and advice for residents and businesses.
It has been developed by members of Derbyshire’s Local Resilience Forum (LRF) – the police and emergency services, Derbyshire County Council, city, district and borough councils, health agencies, the Environment Agency and Highways Agency. These groups already work together to manage incidents like severe weather, flooding, large fires, chemical spills or explosions but the website will allow residents to check information quickly and easily in one place.
The website features a range of information including:
* Safety tips and advice to help residents be well prepared for an emergency
* Advice and support for businesses on preparing business continuity plans
* Information for anyone organising a large community event
* The emergency plans Derbyshire has in place to deal with any major incident
* How to sign up to a community messaging service which can send residents text or e-mail alerts about incidents in their post code area
* Useful contacts and links to other relevant websites & incidents in the county and the new website will help get information out quickly and efficiently.
Residents are encouraged to sign up to the community messaging service to receive phone or e-mail alerts if incidents happen where they live. Anyone can receive these alerts and they are often very useful. We do publish relevant ones on the blog.
Why not check out the new site at www.derbyshireprepared.org.uk

A PARWICH.ORG reader mentioned that it was good to see so many village children out on their bikes.
However they expressed concern that both motorists and cyclists need to look out for each other especially at the blind bends and junctions in the village. Please take care.
Do let us know if there is any interest in the Police running a cycle safety session in the village.
Co-incidently a press release came from the Peak Park today on some free cycling events, the first being on Bike Maintenance at the Ashbourne Cycle Hire Centre this Saturday. Continue Reading »

Following the post on insurance problems relating to ‘flood’ risk and the poll on interest on the possibility of specific solutions for our area, the insurance brokers, the Wilson Organisation, are holding a surgery at the Sycamore Inn from 5pm on Tuesday 11th May. Email CProw@wilorg.com to book a slot.
Many of you will have seen the recent article on this subject on the Parwich Village website and several of you have expressed an interest in discussing your insurance needs with an independent insurance broker, either in a surgery format or individually.
As a result we have arranged to come to Parwich on Tuesday 11 May and Bryan Elliott and I will be in the Sycamore Inn from 5pm onwards. The Wilson Organisation has strong relationships with many insurance companies and this means we can offer bespoke cover, which will cater for your individual circumstances, at competitive premiums. We have researched Parwich and the surrounding areas and we are confident we can help. Please come along and see us. Dog fouling continues to be an issue, as illustrated by the following email to the Blog from the School.
Would it be possible to post another message on the blog regarding dog fouling in the village? We seem to have a problem with someone allowing their dog to leave its mess by the top gate on quite a regular basis. I know this has been a problem elsewhere in the village.
The School will be preparing some posters to remind everyone, but in the meantime please clear up after your dog.
