Beer festival special offer from Derbyshire Connect bus service

Real ale-lovers travelling to Ashbourne beer festival are being offered a special fare on Derbyshire’s new, flexible bus service.

Derbyshire Connect is a bookable bus service rather than a conventional timetabled one. It takes passengers to and from their chosen pick-up points and destinations on their preferred days and times.
The beer festival takes place at Ashbourne Town Hall from 21 to 23 September 2017. Travellers to the festival will pay a special £1 single fare, instead of the usual £2, up to 7pm on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Derbyshire Connect runs weekdays from 7am to 7pm and Saturdays 8am to 7pm. There is no Sunday service. It was launched on a 12-month trial basis in the Ashbourne and Wirksworth areas in February, as far north as Hartington.
The 15-seater bus is fully accessible for passengers in wheelchairs. It can also carry bikes for people who do not wish to make return trips.
Derbyshire Connect bookings can be made by emailing bookings@derbyshireconnect.org.uk or tel: 01335 342951.

Whimper or Glory?

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Last match in the Tuesday League and penultimate match in the Thursday League. Could we go out in a blaze of glory, or a whimper?

Tuesday League.
Home – 5 September – Chatsworth.
Really nice bunch of people play for Chatsworth so win or lose we would enjoy the games. Both Edith and Dawn were away so we had to have a bit of a scratch team. Tony playing with Clara got us of to a great start winning 21 – 9. Similarly Pat and Sue strolled home winners 21 – 15. You can probably have a guess what happened in the two remaining games. Well John B and Dot had been playing as though their lives depended on it, winning games at a canter for the past 3 or 4 weeks, not this week though. They spluttered and coughed their way to a defeat 12 – 21. Rick playing with Harry this week against Chatsworth’s best pair just lost by 5 points. The final score Parwich 70, Chatsworth 66. Not our most convincing win, but a win never the less. Before this last match were were lying in fourth place in the league and if my calculations are correct we should just about hold our own there.

Thursday League
Home – Whitworth Park – 7 September.
Another nice bunch of people to play against. They are considerably higher in the league than us, but then who isn’t. Things did not auger well as in two of our doubles games we only managed a combined score of 10 against 42! However  Rick, having to play twice because of our lack players, playing with Audrey showed how it could be done and clawed back some of the deficit by winning 21 – 12. Parwich 31, Whitworth 54.
The singles was thankfully another story as we won 5 out of the 6 games and the sixth game we only just lost. Tony won 15 – 4, Keith 15 – 7, Pat B and Rick 15 – 8. The combined scores were Parwich 87, Whitworth 55. Although I am sure that we will be relegated we still managed a win 118 – 109. Last game of the season is against the team top in the league so that will definitely seal our fate.
Last match – Away – Hope Works – 14 September – 1.45pm

No Monday night play now. We will be putting the green to bed for the winter.

Extinct Plant Found in the Peaks

hawkweed

Extinct plant rediscovered in the Peak District National Park
A rare plant previously thought to be globally extinct has been rediscovered in the Peak District National Park.
Two small populations of the leek-coloured hawkweed, 62 plants in total, have been found flowering on the banks of the Monsal Trail, in Chee Dale.
Leek-coloured hawkweed flowers are yellow, similar to a dandelion but smaller. The plant gets its name because its leaves are the same chalky-green as the vegetable, leek.
The discovery of Hieracium subprasinifolium, to give the plant its botanical name, was made by Dr Tim Rich whilst collecting seeds for Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank.
Dr Rich said: “Leek-coloured Hawkweed has not been seen in Derbyshire for over 60 years and is thought to have died out at its only other known world site in Staffordshire a few years ago, so I was very, very pleased to find these two small but healthy populations growing near the Monsal Trail. The Allotment Poll

A few weeks ago I ran a poll on here to coincide with  National Allotments Week

The poll attracted 30 responses (thank you all!) with 13 saying they would like to have an allotment in the village.

There were 2 comments that added some good information and ideas for thoses interested.

The Parish Council Clerk provided some valuable information for those interested in an allotment –

“If residents would like to rent an allotment they should write to the Parish Council. If six residents write to a Parish Council requesting provision of allotments the Council is required to formally assess the level of demand.”

Then this great suggestion came from Saskia T –

“I wondered whether a third option of a ‘Community Allotment’ should also be considered: i.e. a shared allotment that could be used by a group of residents who don’t have a veg plot and would share the produce. Other growers in the village could share excess seedlings and excess produce (especially runners beans and marrows…). And if there is enough space: a few fruit trees? Perhaps pie (or should that be ‘pumpkin’) in the sky? The suggestion originates from a visit to an amazing community allotment project in a small hamlet in Australia”

So in conclusion, anyone interested in allotments should write to the Parish Council.

Monte

Thank You!

A massive great big Thank You to Parwich Fit 4 All for their very generous donation of £100 to Friday Football Club.
This is very much appreciated by all involved.

The Wonders of the Peak

Derbyshire County Council has sent the following information:

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery launches Wonders of the Peak
A brand new gallery and digital experience is set to open at our Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

Wonders of the Peak − a journey through time and place − houses the museum’s collection of 1,200 Peak District artefacts collected over 125 years. The Wonder of the Peak website (opens in a new window) allows people to explore the collection digitally while visiting the Peak District, or from the comfort of their own home, or the library, using their smartphone, tablet or computer.
More than 75 volunteers were instrumental in the project. Their contribution included testing the digital content, collecting oral histories, laying out new displays and conserving and documenting artefacts. Continue Reading »

Fruity Tipples

IMG_0801Here’s a couple of drink ideas using some very readily available local produce – blackberries and our old friend the courgette!

Firstly here’s one for blackberries of which masses can be found by the lanes and paths around the area. This requires nothing but a bottle of vodka, blackberries and sugar.

Blackberry Vodka

Ingredients
  • 70cl Bottle of vodka
  • 100 gram of sugar
  • Blackberries
Method
  • First remove 1/3 of the bottle of vodka and have a sit down 😂👍
  • Add the sugar to the remaining vodka in the bottle
  • Wash and dry blackberries and add to the bottle till it’s full
  • Put the top on the bottle, give it a good shake and put in a cool dark cupboard
  • Give it a shake one a week
  • After a few weeks have a taste and add a bit more sugar if you think it needs it
  • Should be ready to drink after 3 or 4 months. You’ll need to strain it through muslin or similar and store in a clean bottle

Try other fruit such as damsons and alcoholes such as brandy

And now the answer to that scourge of the vegetable plot – the forgotten courgettes

Courgette martini

Ingredients
  • 1 courgette, coarsely grated
  • juice 2 lemons
  • 2 tbsp caster sugar
  • 25ml vermouth
  • 50ml gin
  • ice
  • mint to garnish
Method
  • Mix the courgette with the lemon juice and sugar and leave to steep for 1 hr. In the meantime, place a martini glass in the fridge to chill.
  • Strain the courgette mixture through a sieve into a jug.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice then add 25ml of the courgette syrup followed by the vermouth and gin.
  • Stir gently a few times then strain into your chilled glass. Garnish with a mint leaf and serve.

Enjoy!

Bowls

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Penultimate match in the Tuesday League this week and only two more matches left in the Thursday League. Not a lot to play for in either league really except of course your bowling village stalwarts have just about survived another season. The way things are shaping however the end of the bowls club could be not too far away. I wonder what the green could be used for?

Tuesday League.
Home – August 29 – Ashwood Park.
For the first time since I can remember our opponents only turned up with 7 instead of 8 players. It was probably just as well as the chap playing on his own scored 15 points with his two woods. We thankfully managed to score 21 with our four woods. Dot and John B have been playing like demons for the past few weeks and they continued their purple patch winning 21 – 2. Rick and Edith came home winners 21 – 14. Our ever present captain Dawn playing with Tony romped home 21 – 19. The final score Parwich 84, Ashwood Park 50. Great result which should keep us in a safe place in the league.
Final Match – Home – Chatsworth – 5.45pm

Thursday League
Away – Tideswell – 31 August.
Now for most of this season the writing has been on the wall for us to be relegated from the  top division. What a surprise when the league table after last weeks results put Parwich fourth from bottom. In this league the bottom three get relegated!! It was essential that we lost the match against Tideswell who were the team immediately above us to ensure that we are relegated. Thankfully we played to our strengths and promptly lost the doubles 29 to 63. The singles players needed to do equally badly. Our two star lady players, Dawn and Edith were missing so losing was certainly on the cards! We played very well considering the gravity of the situation and finished up winning the singles 77 – 62. Not enough to give us a win thank goodness. Final score Tideswell 125, Parwich 103. Even if we had won, the final two matches are against teams who are much higher in the league than we are so congratulations to Tideswell.
Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 7 September – 1.45pm

MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
If you can’t make Mondays just let Tony (724) or John (455) know and we will arrange an alternative.

Stolen Sheep

police

We are appealing for information following a report of theft of three Greyface Dartmoor Sheep that were stolen from a property in Biggin. The theft is believed to have occurred overnight from 2200 hours on 25/8 and they were discovered missing the following morning.

The sheep are a unique breed and this has understandably caused some distress to the owner.

We are asking for anybody with any information that could assist us with locating the sheep or the person(s) responsible for the theft to contact us either:

– On 101
– On our dedicated email DRCT@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk

The crime reference is: 17000366151

Many Thanks

Partial Via Gellia Closure

Derbyshire Dales CC has advised that there will be a partial closure of the Via Gellia from 6 September.  Details of the closure and diversions can be found here

September Village Lunch

We have been asked by the Parish Council to publish the following –

Derbyshire Environmental Trust administer the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund. This fund allows grants to be made for certain community projects that are near to landfill sites. It is funded by tax rebates available to land fill operators. Average grants are in the region of £20,000 though there is no specific limit.

The Parish Council has established that Parwich is located close enough to such a site to be able to apply for a grant. It has also been confirmed that playground improvements would be a suitable project.

At this stage the Parish Council is interested in hearing from residents about the sort of improvements they would like to see. Ideas from children would be particularly appreciated.

It is not possible to confirm if any particular suggestion would be implemented as costs and alternatives may have to be considered. The whole process may take many months due to the timetable for preparing and reviewing applications.

Depending on the proposals made permission from the Paek Parks Planning Authority may be required.

Please e-mail or write to the Parish Council, or contact the Clerk or any of the Councillors with your suggestions.

clerk@parwichparishcouncil.org.uk

We have been asked by the Parish Council to publish the following –

The Peak District National Park Planning committee has rejected this Planning Application.

The reason given was that

“The proposed installation by reasons of its height and exposed position would appear as an intrusive feature in this open countryside location, detrimental to the visual amenities of the area.”

No further public consultation had taken place as the application was regarded as a “permitted development”.
